Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY:


This position reports to the Chair of the Undergraduate Science Department and is part of an academic department that promotes student learning, success, retention, and graduation in the natural sciences. The Science Department offers four bachelor's degrees (B.S., Biology, Forensic Science, Medical Science and Neuroscience). The ideal candidate will have student-centered learning/teaching and practical experience in two or more of these areas of concentration.


A M.S. in Biology (or equivalent discipline) from an accredited institution is required. Successful teaching and practical experience with active learning and alternative pedagogies in the Biological Sciences at the undergraduate level is required. Experience with teaching introductory to advanced laboratory based courses with small class sizes and frequent student interaction required. Demonstration of operational skills to support laboratory instrumentation is required.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Maintain accurate course records and submit related reports as requested.
  • Effectively assess student performance.
  • Create a safe and inclusive learning environment for students.
  • Utilize multiple strategies to facilitate learning, i.e. small group work, workshops, etc.
  • Incorporate new technologies and methods that enhance teaching and learning into his/her instructional methods.
  • Support undergraduate laboratory activities encouraging students to be fully engaged in the learning process.
  • Maintain scheduled office hours according to University policy.
  • Stay current with best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Incorporate technology to enhance student learning.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to active learning strategies, mentoring students, and collaborative scholarship, as well as flexibility in teaching different types of students.
  • Understand and appreciate the University's mission, purpose and goals and the role of faculty in achieving those goals.
  • Attend trainings as required.
  • Perform any other duties or tasks as assigned by the University.


Requirements:


  • M.S. in Biology (or equivalent discipline) required. Ph. D. or equivalent Preferred
  • Master's degree plus extensive teaching experience in introductory and upper level Biology courses required; prior undergraduate teaching experience is required.
  • Technical expertise/certifications associated with the Natural Science disciplines preferred.
  • Experience with student academic support and success required.
  • Ability to adhere to University policies and procedures.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with discretion and within FERPA and HIPAA guidelines.
  • All new employees must complete the FERPA, Anti-Harassment, and any other required online trainings within 15 days of employment.
  • Must adhere to University COVID-19 testing, symptom tracking and all other COVID protocols established by the University.
