Description

Position: Adaptive Physical Education (APE) Teacher and Recreation Manager

Location: Northbrook / Skokie / Highland Park

Supervisor: Therapeutic Day School Site Manager and Director of Recreation

Schedule: Monday through Thursday / 8:30 am to 6:30 pm

(occasional weekend special events)

           Wage Range: $55,000 - $65,000 annually

  FLSA Classification: Full-time / Exempt / Salary

 

SUMMARY

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Adaptive PE Teacher to join our educational team. The Adaptive PE Teacher will work with students who have special needs or disabilities, ensuring they have access to Physical Education activities that are tailored to their individual abilities. This role requires a deep understanding of adaptive teaching techniques, a commitment to inclusivity, and a passion for helping students of all abilities thrive through Physical Education.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Responsibilities for APE:

  • Assessment: Conduct thorough assessments of students' physical abilities and needs to create individualized PE plans, including the Brockport Physical Fitness Test.
  • Adaptive Curriculum Development: Develop adaptive PE lesson plans and curricula that align with state and district standards while accommodating the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
  • Instruction: Provide effective and engaging adaptive PE instruction to students, incorporating a variety of adaptive techniques and equipment as needed.
  • Inclusion: Foster an inclusive and supportive environment where all students, regardless of their abilities, feel comfortable and valued in Physical Education classes.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with special Education Teachers, therapists, and other support staff to address students' unique needs and adapt instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Progress Monitoring: Continuously assess and track students' progress, adjusting teaching strategies and accommodations as necessary.
  • Safety: Ensure the safety of all students during physical activities by implementing appropriate safety measures and protocols.
  • Equipment Management: Maintain and oversee the use of adaptive equipment, ensuring it is in good condition and accessible to students as needed.
  • Communication: Maintain open and clear communication with parents, guardians, and the school community regarding students' progress and any concerns.
  • Professional Development: Stay updated on current trends and research in Adaptive Physical Education, and participate in relevant professional development opportunities.

 

Key Responsibilities for Recreation Specialist:

  • Program Development: Collaborate with the Recreation Program Manager to develop and implement a diverse range of sports programs and activities suitable for participants of various ages and skill levels.
  • Curriculum Design: Create sports-specific curricula and lesson plans, emphasizing skill development, game rules, and safety protocols.
  • Equipment Management: Manage sports equipment inventory, ensuring equipment is in good condition, and arrange for repairs or replacements as necessary.
  • Participant Engagement: Engage with participants and provide guidance, support, and motivation to foster their interest and passion for sports.
  • Event Coordination: Plan and oversee sports tournaments, leagues, and special events, including scheduling, venue coordination, and participant registration.
  • Data and Evaluation: Maintain accurate records of program attendance, participant feedback, and program outcomes. Use this data to evaluate program effectiveness and make improvements as needed.
Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Physical Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • State teaching certification in Physical Education.
  • Special Education/Adaptive Physical Education endorsement or experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
  • Experience with Therapeutic Recreation and/or CTRS preferred.
  • Knowledge of adaptive teaching techniques and strategies.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for working with students with special needs.
  • Technical Proficiency: Familiarity and ability to navigate Microsoft Office Suite, Excel, Google sheets, etc.
  • Valid Driver’s License, good driving record, and auto insurance.
