Activity Specialist
Title of Position: Activity Specialist
Job Type: Full-Time
Compensation: $17 - $19 per hour, commensurate with experience
Location: Queens, NY

Queens Community House (QCH) serves residents of all ages, races, and ethnicities while supporting the viability of neighborhoods and of Queens. Our mission is to provide individuals and families with the tools to enrich their lives and build healthy, inclusive communities. Each year, we help thousands of Queens residents to thrive in school and make healthy life choices, to succeed in educating themselves and become engaged neighbors, stabilize their housing situation, and make the most of their senior years. Today, we provide programs for residents in 25 program sites in 11 neighborhoods across Queens.

We are seeking a passionate, motivated, and eager to learn Activity Specialist to enthusiastically and actively supervise and develop youth participants in grades ranging from first to twelfth grade.

Responsibilities:

  • Understand and enforce program expectations, policies, and protocols to ensure a safe and respectful environment in alignment with agency, school, and funder protocols and guidelines.
  • Actively monitor, engage, and ensure the safety of participants during all program activities, including pick-up, snack, transitions, clubs, activities, and dismissal.
  • Design and lead enriching and developmental activities for youth (sports, games, literacy, arts and crafts, theatre, etc.).
  • Develop and implement age-appropriate curriculum; submit sequenced lesson plans in advance.
  • Demonstrate professional and appropriate communication with students, teachers, staff, parents, and other stakeholders.
  • Engage with youth and use appropriate strategies to preemptively defuse inappropriate behavior and encourage positive interactions demonstrating effective program and classroom management.
  • Ensure proper care of all area materials, organize the room, and report any misused or damaged materials to a supervisor in order to ensure safe and effective operations.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and complete professional development hours indicated at the time of hiring.
  • Assist participants in homework and provide them with tools to succeed in school.
  • Responsible for tracking, completion, and timely submission of all the program reports relative to this position, including, but not limited to, participant attendance, performance, supply requests, lesson plans, and timesheets.
  • Support the organization of special events such as culminating showcases, awards, training, and parent meetings as necessary.
  • Communicate with the direct supervisor about any issues, including schedule modifications or important behavioral or environmental difficulties.
  • Actively participate in training and professional development to continuouslyincrease knowledge,principles, and practices of child and youth development and actively use this knowledge to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Always demonstrate professional behavior.Serve as a positive role model for participants andmaintain appropriate and professional boundaries with participants at all times.
  • Promote responsible and healthy decision-making among all participants.
  • Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces diversity.
  • Develop social-emotional skills, leadership skills, team-building, and self-advocacy among all participants.
  • Foster academic and non-academic skills and broaden participant horizons.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work in a public school setting, both indoor and outdoor, and/or from home with appropriate visual and audio connectivity; ability to give undivided attention; absence of child care or other obligations during work hours.
  • Minimum of High School Diploma or GED and must be currently enrolled in an institution of higher education.
  • One year of After-school work experience, one fullsummercampwork experience, or two years of related experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and facilitate leadership, community service, civic engagement, or enrichment activities.
  • Ability to develop group lesson plans and curricula.
  • Must have a commitment to work from a strengths-based positive youth development perspective.
  • Demonstrated attendance and punctuality in meeting the required schedule.
  • Good interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and use appropriate discretion.
  • Must be cleared and maintain clearance throughout the duration of employment by NYS DOH and DOE fingerprinting screening, NYS Central Registrar Background Check, 3 Reference checks, Staff Exclusion List (SEL), and must provide a medical clearance with updated TB test results.
  • Computer literacy – specifically Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office 365, Outlook E-mail, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Google Classroom.
  • Must have access to a computer/laptop with a camera, microphone, and internet access.
