Job Title: Activity Assistant
Department: Health Care
Reports To: Activity Director
Supervises: N/A
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt (Hourly Wages)
Basic Purpose: In keeping with Woodlands’ tradition, we seek to enhance the quality of life and holistic growth of older persons by providing high quality service in a cheerful, timely manner and by communicating, coordinating, and cooperating with others to attain goals.
Job Summary: Supports and works directly with the Health Care Activities Director. Participates in off site activities and daily events; leads exercises; transports residents; prepares and distributes the monthly event calendar and resident of the month.
Performs other appropriate related and unrelated assigned duties.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Prefer College Degree in Related Field
Licensure/Certification: CPR certification card
Experience: Prior experience in long-term care or activities preferred, but not required

  • Must be able to cope with mental and emotional stress related to working with persons who are ill, disabled, elderly, and/or emotionally upset
  • Is knowledgeable of resident rights and ensures an atmosphere which allows for the privacy, dignity and well-being of all residents in a safe, secure environment
  • Follow safety regulations, reporting injuries or unsafe conditions and work practices to appropriate administrator
  • Follow acceptable standards of personal hygiene and comply with department dress code
  • Possess a fundamental understanding of sanitation and cleanliness
  • Regular, punctual and dependable attendance
  • Provide assistance to and work directly with staff, residents, family of residents, visitors, government agencies and the general public
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supports ideas, events and activities planned and implemented by the Health Care Activities Director by participating and encouraging resident participation
  • Leads exercise and participates in other daily events and activities
  • Posts daily activities where residents can easily read and participation is encouraged
  • Participate in resident care planning by identifying the activity needs of residents in accordance with the medical assessment, working with Occupational Therapists as appropriate
  • Publish and distribute a monthly calendar of events and periodic family newsletter
  • Aid in transporting residents to off site activities
  • Helping load and unload the Woodlands van and cars
  • Provide individualized attention, which encourages each resident's ability to maintain or attain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being
  • Maintain the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each resident in the delivery of services to them. Interact with residents in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment
  • Fully understand all aspects of residents' rights, including the right to be free of restraints and free of abuse. Responsible for promptly reporting to the charge nurse or administrative staff incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents' rights
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, neat, and clean environment; report environmental deficiencies to the charge nurse such as lighting or equipment problems
  • Protect the personal belongings of each resident including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing, memorabilia, etc. Promptly report missing items according to established policy and participate in efforts to locate missing items
  • Observe residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly report these changes to appropriate licensed nursing personnel
  • Lift, move, and transport residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention
  • Aid residents in restroom usage when on off site activities and when otherwise necessary
  • Communicate and interact effectively and tactfully with the resident, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors
  • Perform all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated, and proper disposal of soiled materials
  • Walk extensively to and from various locations of the facility while transporting residents within the Woodlands’ Retirement Community
  • Support an atmosphere, which promotes a homelike environment
  • Help decorate the Health Care Wing for holidays and/or special events
  • Respond to inquiries relating to his/her particular area or to requests from residents, visitors, other personnel, etc. within given time frames and within established policy
  • Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, but which may be altered or redesigned depending upon individual circumstances
  • Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, uniform and dress codes including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Requires extensive physical effort; standing, grasping, balancing, carrying, bending, lifting, stretching, stooping, pulling and pushing
    • Paper, Craft items, supplies 20 lbs.
    • Transfer of Residents, ambulation of residents, and equipment 50 lbs.
  • Requires lifting of residents (sometimes alone and sometimes with a partner)
  • Requires pushing of residents in wheelchairs
  • May need to drive van to transport residents to activities
  • Standing frequently during the 8 hour shift
  • Frequent walking, stooping, bending
  • Occasional reaching above the head
