Accounting Intern


***SUMMER 2024***


Location:  Greenville, SC

 


Summary
NHE’s full-time accounting summer internship program offers college students the opportunity to learn about property management and HOA accounting. The internship program allows accounting and finance students the opportunity to enhance their understanding of account payables and receivables. Under the supervision of the Controller and Association Accounting Supervisor, the Accounting Intern will spend half the summer working with NHE’s Property Management accounting team and the other half of the summer working with NHE’s Homeowners Associations (HOA) accounting team. The Accounting Intern will interact with our Community Managers and Association Managers across NHE’s Conventional, Affordable, and HOA Divisions.


  • 10-week internship, 30-40 hours for full-time summer program
  • Eligible participants must be currently pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business, Finance or related field with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA
  • Proficient in MS Office Programs (specifically Excel)
  • This position will report to Human Resources in the Corporate Office in Greenville, SC, but may take direction from the Association Accounting Supervisor and Controller during their time at NHE.
  • The selected candidate will have the potential for future internship and other full-time permanent employment opportunities with NHE, Inc. once they have successfully completed their internship and education.


The ideal candidate should have a positive attitude, strong work ethic, be reliable and self-motivated with good communication skills and attention to detail. Must have the ability to work with little direction maintaining confidentiality and professionalism. Through the program, the intern will use Microsoft Office including Word, Excel and Outlook, and gain bookkeeping experience with our accounting software Yardi.



Internship Summer Project
Interns may be assigned one or more projects to work on and complete throughout the summer. Interns may be required to prepare and present project work findings and/or recommendations, utilizing Microsoft PowerPoint and Office Suite, to senior management.



I.   ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs systems input to include receipts, payables, and journal entries.
  • Performs systems input of receivable receipts using TOPS and Yardi software and bank technologies.
  • Utilizes payables software program, Strong Room Solutions, which includes vendor data and NACHA files.
  • May perform monthly bank recons using TOPS and Yardi software.
  • Assist with replacement reserve requests as needed.
  • Enter utility invoices for the Affordable properties.
  • Review Payscan invoices for all properties.
  • Participate in internal operational audits of properties.
  • Works with and assists Controller, Association Accounting Supervisor, VP of Finance, Accounting Specialists, and Accountants as needed.
  • Works with Community Managers, Regionals Managers and Association Managers as needed.
  • Assist with audit support.
  • Assist with month end financial packages as needed.
  • Assist with acquisitions and dispositions.

Accounting Intern - On the Job Training

  • Operate computers programmed with accounting software to record, store, and analyze information.
  • Audit figures, postings, and documents for correct entry, mathematical accuracy, and proper codes.
  • Classify, record, and summarize numerical and financial data to compile and keep financial records, using journals and ledgers or computers.
  • Debit, credit, and total accounts on computer spreadsheets and databases, using specialized accounting software.
  • Receive, record, and bank cash, checks, and vouchers.
  • Comply with federal, state, and company policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Compile statistical, financial, accounting or auditing reports and tables pertaining to such matters as cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses.
  • Code documents according to company procedures.
  • Reconcile or note and report discrepancies found in records.

Eligible participants must be currently pursuing an Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, Business, Finance or related field with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.


Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
