Job Description:
The Academic Programs Abroad Advisor is responsible for recruiting and advising study abroad students from assigned colleges for semester and summer APA programs, including but not limited to exchanges, direct enroll, and affiliate partners. This position supports the students throughout the APA process from initial inquiry to returnee stage. The position works with students to collect and organize LSU APA required documentation, manage tracking mechanisms, maintain required documents, forms, and processes, etc.
Job Responsibilities:
Advising Duties & Responsibilities: 60%
  • Advises students from assigned college(s) throughout the process on Academic Programs Abroad opportunities and requirements, administers acceptance decisions, and promotes the program through outreach to the university community. Advising may include information about major/minor/elective requirements, financial aid, scholarships, credit transfer, and other topics.
  • Maintains expert understanding of University policies pertaining to Academic Programs Abroad. Responds to inquiries from students, parents, faculty and others regarding program policies, procedures and requirements, making referrals as appropriate.
  • Advises on the Benjamin A Gilman, Boren, Critical Language Scholarship, APA scholarships, and other scholarship opportunities.
  • Maintains accurate applicant data, runs reports, and manages website information through the Terra Dotta application site.
  • Maintains effective relationships with academic and administrative departments, as well as overseas partners and program providers. Acts as liaison between the overseas partner/program provider and students for education abroad and exchange purposes.
Programming Operations: 30%
  • Manages the education abroad scholarship process from application through award.
  • Develops and executes a marketing and recruitment plan, but not limited to, bi-annual Education Abroad fairs, information sessions, pre-departure orientation, and re-entry sessions.
  • Oversees the credit transfer process from pre-departure to post-study abroad and maintains an accurate database of previously articulated courses.

Professional Development: 10%
  • Ensures program quality and continual self-development through self-directed learning, professional development, and appropriate site visits.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree

Master's degree
Specific Experience:
  • Proficiency with Terra Dotta software.
  • Experience studying, living, or working abroad.
  • Experience with education abroad and/or academic advising.
  • Familiar with developing and implementing marketing plans across multiple platforms.

Additional Requirements:
FERPA -As with all LSU employees, due to this position title and/or responsibilities, this position has an obligation to assist students in the acquisition of necessary services. Should a student appear in need of or seek assistance with issues of an emotional, behavioral, or mental health related matter they should be referred to the proper service within the Student Health Center. In situations where the student creates an impression that they are a danger to themselves or others, the advisor should immediately contact the Care Team, the Dean of Students or the appropriate law enforcement agency. The employee outside of those rights contained within FERPA should create no impression of client or patient confidentiality.
