Job Summary
Conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems. Duties & Responsibilities
Research - Fieldwork/Data Collection
• Conduct research activities related to fisheries population dynamics and water quality.
• Collect and monitor fisheries and water quality data
• Conduct fieldwork from small and large boats on a variety of waterways.
• Participate in boat electrofishing, netting and other appropriate gear types. Administrative
• Record, enter, and analyze large volumes of data.
• Maintain and repair of sampling gear, boats, boat trailers, and laboratory equipment.
• Provide general field station upkeep. Other
• Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
• Keep abreast of developments in this discipline
Additional Physical Demands
Will require work in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), travel throughout the state of Illinois, working irregular hours, overnights, and weekends; lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Overnight travel may be necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of this position.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Aquatic Ecology, Zoology or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with field collection protocols. Experience with safety protocols in relation to field work and data collection. Experience in laboratory work and large river sampling. Experience with large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles along with other fisheries, water quality, and related field equipment. Experience with standardized long-term river monitoring (LTRM) sampling protocols. Training in boater safety and laboratory safety is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of field and laboratory skills as well as identification of Midwest fish species and ability to collect biological data such as fisheries population dynamics and water quality in large river systems is preferred. Familiarity with boat operations, trailering and boater safety is preferred. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly-employed software and databases. Must be able to swim.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 1/3/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
