Job Summary
Conduct geoarchaeological investigations for research and projects associated with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Duties & Responsibilities
- Conduct geoarchaeological field investigations (e.g., collecting soil cores, backhoe trenching).
- Perform analyses and provide interpretations of geoarchaeological data (e.g., site formation processes, stratigraphic interpretations, natural and cultural modification, landscape reconstruction).
- Conduct and/or oversee Phase I, II, and Ill archaeological field investigations ensuring professional and regulatory standards are met.
- Compile, edit, and author ATSRs, ASSRs, and technical reports and report chapters detailing recovered geoarchaeological and archaeological data.
- Work with ISAS personnel in designing and implementing research strategies and projects incorporating geoarchaeological data. This will include working with the new ISAS Environmental Archaeology Laboratory.
- Conduct independent and supplemental research activities as time and workflow dictates. • Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of ISAS and PRI.
Additional Physical Demands
Work is conducted in office, laboratory, and field settings. Fieldwork will require working in adverse conditions (inclement weather, biting insects, remoteness) and occasional travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois in both rural and urban settings. Will require occasional overnight travel. Position involves operating, lifting, and manipulating field equipment and other items over uneven terrain weighing up to 50 pounds. Minimum Qualifications
Master's in anthropology, archaeology or closely related field such as earth or soil sciences. Demonstrated proficiency in geoarchaeological methods and archaeological applications. Demonstrated experience in conducting all phases of field investigations in research and cultural resources settings. Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. in anthropology, archaeology or closely related field, such as earth or soil sciences. Experience assisting with all phases of field investigations in the Midwest. Specialization in Midwestern Archaeology, particularly the Late Woodland and/or Mississippian periods in the American Bottom. Experience with Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) requirements and guidelines for archaeological investigations and reporting.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated ability to conduct all phases of field investigations in research and cultural resources settings. Basic knowledge of the archaeological resources and culture history in the Midwest. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after 12/4/2023. Salary is commensurate with experience.
