ACADEMIC COACH - ENTRADA SCHOLARS PROGRAM
SUMMARY:
The Entrada Scholars Program is a four-week academic program for racial and ethnic minority juniors and seniors in high school. The program is currently seeking to fill multiple Academic Coach positions to build a team of seven to eight Academic Coaches who are responsible for providing academic support to students enrolled in a college course as part of the Entrada Scholars Program. Academic coaches attend a college class on site, lead Academic Coaching sessions, and monitor the academic performance of about 10-13 Entrada scholars. In addition, the Academic Coach provides regular updates, informing the Entrada Assistant Director for Academic Development of academic concerns and needed academic strategies. Candidates must be able to come to Calvin's campus during the training (June 26-June 27) and implementation of the Entrada Scholars Program (June 30-July24).
REPORTS TO:
Entrada Assistant Director for Academic Development
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Attend an assigned college course with a group of 8-13 scholars Monday-Friday (about 4 hours daily from 8 AM – 12 PM)
  • Conduct daily Academic Coaching sessions on critical thinking, learning skills, and writing development (about 2 hours daily from 1:30 PM -3:30 PM)
  • Ensure that the scholars are completing the required assignments for their college course
  • Work collaboratively with the faculty
  • Work actively with scholars to assist them in developing approaches that will lead to improve their academic performance and college readiness
  • Monitor scholars in their academic performance and immediately notify the Assistant Director of scholars in academic jeopardy
  • Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and opening and closing program activities
CLASSIFICATION/BENEFITS:
Profession/Technical, non-faculty status position of approximately four weeks duration; no benefits.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required; multicultural experience with youth; teaching experience highly preferred.
COMPENSATION:
$2180 stipend divided into two installments in July.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The position requires the ability to explain college policies in difficult situations, write and edit reports or technical documents, and activities requiring significant communication skills. Handles confidential information.
COMPLEXITY:
The position requires the ability to solve problems and to deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Instructions may be furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
The position has the authority to make recommendations that will affect procedures, processes, and practices involving students or employees within the same department.
DECISION MAKING/JUDGMENT:
The responsibilities of this position typically involve projects and/or assignments that have considerable decision-making authority regarding procedures, plans, and schedules. In dealing with students daily, 5 days a week, this job is almost entirely independent. In moments of crisis, there may be procedures in place, but the Academic Coach must be able to work independently.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
The position requires regular participation with employees and students, dealing with items of a routine nature with occasional supervision. Participants use information and expertise to influence outcomes and solve problems.
