Position Description - Academic Advisor


The Academic Advisor supports student success and persistence by helping undergraduate students set and achieve academic, career, and personal goals, assisting with course selection and registration and orienting new students regarding key University systems (LMS, SIS, etc.). The Academic Advisor serves as a referral source to connect students to University services and resources that can assist them in achieving their goals. The Academic Advisor assists in the ongoing development and maintenance of advising resources and trainings. Through a collaborative relationship with the student and their faculty mentor, the Academic Advisor supports the student in reaching a four-year graduation target consistent with their professional and academic goals.


Responsibilities:

  • Advise a caseload of students, current and prospective, on matters including transitioning to college, registration, schedule development, goal setting, curricular and co-curricular engagement, academic progress, referral to services, and issues impacting persistence.
  • Collaborate with Academic Affairs, Academic Units, Registration, and other campus resources to support advising relevant processes, procedures and work flows, including but not limited to student-centric course schedule development.
  • Conduct early alert outreach and academic support to students. Coordinate and execute special topic workshops that support the needs of students.
  • Serve as a liaison to academic areas, faculty mentors, financial aid, registrar, admissions, housing, access services, tutoring, writing center, and other campus resources. Collaborate with these areas to improve student success and persistence.
  • Maintained detailed records and communicate regularly with faculty mentor and student on issues related to positive academic progress. Abide by FERPA regulations to uphold students’ privacy.
  • Develop, maintain, and promote academic advising relevant resources, which may include social media platforms, website content, student success resources, and print materials for campus stakeholders. This includes student, faculty, and staff resources and training expectations.
  • Champion diversity, build an inclusive culture and learning experience, and maintain an equitable learning environment.
  • All other duties as assigned. Additional tasks may include, but is not limited to: committee work to support institutional priorities, departmental supports to support student success.

Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Academic Advising, Higher Education Administration, Education, Student Affairs, Psychology, Social Work, or other related degree.
  • 3-5 years experience in the field
  • Prior experience in academic advising, preferably at the collegiate level. Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse student populations in order to apply inclusive advising strategies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Multilingual skills highly preferred.
