Academic Advisor (2-positions)

Student Affairs

Tsaile Campus


Duty Schedule:

Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm; may require evenings and/or weekend hours.

Summary/Objective of Position:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for working with ALL students to choose an academic pathway leading to graduation; earn a desired degree. The Advisor will consider students' academic needs, goals, interests, and educational experiences to determine the best educational/degree program. The advisor will provide a holistic academic advising approach to promote good academic standing, persistence, retention, and graduation. This position requires innovation, initiative, a positive attitude and motivation to advise all students in a supportive learning environment.

ACADEMIC ADVISING & COACHING, (60%)

-Provide guidance with all students including students with disabilities regularly to review degree checklist, course planning, and registration from semester to semester; ensure General Education and Program Requirements are fulfilled/completed,

-Review educational/career goals to ensure students are on correct degree programs leading to goal attainment in a timely manner,

-Provide individual and/or group advising services to new, transferring, and continuing students,

-Maintain dialogue with all advisors from early registration, first-week of instructions, at mid-term, and throughout the semester track academic progress, retention, and persistence leading to good academic standing from one-semester to the next,

-Provide a hub information/resources to share with students re:admissions, registration, financial aid, residence life, and other support services under the Student Affairs' programs,

-Assist with providing academic workshops based on students' needs, i.e. Reading Degree Checklist.

Assist students with navigating the DC Portal, Blackboard, and access campus resources to ensure academic success,

-Explore new & innovative academic advising models for effective delivery of the academic advising, student learning outcomes, and re-imagined event/academic planning to meet the needs of all students; inclusive of students with disabilities.

STUDENT SUPPORT, (20%)

-Provide guidance with students support services to ensure quality, accurate and timely services are provided to all students; degree planning, registrations, drops/adds, and update degree checklists; maintain & document all notes/records of students' visits and outreaches,

-Positive Relationship Building: encourages all students to participate in curricular and co-curricular learning activities that promote and create positive relationships/sense of belonging with campus and social media activities, i.e. ZOOM/Video conferencing,

-Facilitate & implement student support services that are personalized and allow students to track, monitor, and continuously revisit a meaningful academic pathway,

-Assist and provide recommendatio0ns for the development of policies, processes, and programming that affects and supports the Academic Advising programs and services,

-Collaborate with Faculty and support staff to identify needs for interventions re: tutoring, referral to support services, i.e. mental health/wellness to ensure academic success.

CAMPUS NETWORK, (15%)

-Research & Understand the AZ GEC/Grade Equivalency Courses, (A, B, & C); other transfer requirements to ensure a smooth transition to and from four-year colleges/universities,

-Collaborate with various programs & departments across all six-campuses/centers: FYE/First Year Experience, Academic Advising, Peer Mentoring, Residential Life, Financial Aid, Registrar Office, Academic Faculty, and Campus Directors/Managers to share student support services, program planning, collaboration opportunities, and promote student advocacy and support,

-Prepare, collect, and disseminate academic-related information to educate all students with college readiness, college success, life-skill development and preparation with their academic learning and career/workforce readiness skills.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education & Experience


Minimum:

BA/BS Degree in Psychology, Counseling, Social Work, Education, and/or related field, plus a minimum of two-years working with adult learners in a Higher Education Setting.

Preferred:

MA/MS Degree in counseling, Social work, Education, and/or related field.

Knowledge:

-Knowledge with FERPA, ADA, and other policies to demonstrate understanding; commitment to student confidentiality,

-Demonstrate knowledgeable with the academic/career pathways and degree programs,

-Demonstrate knowledge with degree checklists; access the AGEC requirements for transfer, and encourage students to use the AZ Transfer link/site to find course equivalency to plan transfer to from other colleges and universities,

-Knowledgeable in using basic office technology (desktop computer, laptop, copier/scanner); use of social platforms to conduct advising, video conference, and workshops,

-Promote Student Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity.

Skills:

-Demonstrate proficiency with computer skills, Microsoft Office applications, internet and intranet, web-based software, social media, and student information systems: Jenzabar EX and ConexED.

-Demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills to plan and host academic workshops,

-Work effectively in team situations,

-Excellent customer service skills using tact and diplomacy; professional and pleasant office manner,

-Excellent listening skills; patience and calmness.

Abilities:

-Possess positive and encouraging attitude to motivate students to succeed and advance in their educational programming,

-Detail oriented and able to organize and manage multiple projects while maintaining a high level of accuracy,

-Ability to multiple tasks and execute assignments with tactfulness,

-Ability to understand and explain policies in a manner that is easily understood by students.

Physical Requirements, Work Environment & Travel:

Work is performed in an office environment. At times, required to lift typical office equipment and supplies weighing 25lbs. Travel is required to other campuses and sites using GSA vehicle. Travel maybe required by vehicle and/or air to attend conferences and trainings out of state.

Other Requirement(s):

Posses a valid state issued Driver's License. Complete Highway Safety training to operate government vehicles. Attend/Complete First Aid & CPR training. Oral fluency in Navajo is highly desirable, but not mandatory.
