Genentech, Inc. seeks a Senior Research Software Engineer in its South San Francisco, California location.
Duties: Identify innovative and sustainable solutions to improve data management and business processes to address the needs of our customers. Elicit requirements and effectively communicate them to diverse stakeholders and team members, and act as a liaison between scientists and offshore software development teams. Define product roadmap and strategy in collaboration with customers and Software Engineering management. Develop and drive strategies to support our data driven organization. Successfully work with software developers, technical architects, business analysts and support personnel to develop roadmaps, backlog items, and other artifacts which help the product team meet the business objectives. Work closely with key stakeholders in the business unit to define and influence the functionality of IT solutions supporting critical research processes. Manage multiple product backlogs of Translation Research tools that support science focused on in-vivo studies. Define strategic and tactical approaches in engaging Translational Researchers and Pathologists to co-design solutions to support drug discovery workflows. Oversee development of technical solutions to support in-vivo study design, execution, data collection and statistical analysis.
Education and experience required: Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Life Science or related field, and 5 years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience in the position offered or as Software Engineer, Architect, Software Technical Lead or related position.
Special Requirements: Must have 5 years of experience with the following:
- Translating complex scientific requirements into software solutions;
- Agile software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, architecture, design, implementation, release, and maintenance within a scientific environment;
- Using Spring and Java based software development technologies and Microservices architecture;
- Engineering data flows, exposures and transformations based on SQL (Oracle, MySQL), no-SQL (MongoDB) and full text search (Elastic Search and SOLR) data sources;
- Designing and implementing biostatistical tools for In-Vivo measurements analysis including R language and RShiny web framework;
- Reviewing mathematical description of statistical data analysis methods and models;
- Acting as a full stack developer building enterprise solution using frontend (Angular, React) and backend (Java, Groovy) technologies.
Must have at least 1 year of experience with the following:
- Working with event-driven software architecture patterns utilizing Kafka toolkit and Openstack cloud based solutions;
- Facilitating workshops using Evenstorming method and exploring problem domains conducting In-Vivo subject matter expert and developer processes;
- Serving as an Agile Product Owner with experience in managing remote, distributed teams working in vast time zone ranges.
May telecommute up to 2 days per week.
Requires approximately 10% domestic and international travel, reimbursed.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position of California is $210,816 to $276,400.00 per year. Actual pay within the range will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
