SECONDARY BAND TEACHER - MUSIC (9-12)
**SPLIT POSITION: TAHQUITZ HIGH SCHOOL & WEST VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL**
**KNOWLEDGE OF AND EXPERIENCE WITH INSTRUCTING MARIACHI BAND IS DESIRABLE**
Job Description
Under the direction of the Site Administration, to organize and implement quality band teaching that is inspiring
and engaging. Plan and conduct instrument ensemble lessons for students. Collaboration with other music
teachers to plan performances and recruitment, developing band programs, and demonstrating proficiency in
required instruments are core elements. Assist in school programs and follow General Duties and
Responsibilities Guidelines, as required. Knowledge of and experience with instructing Mariachi Band is
desirable.
Examples of Duties
• Experience with marching band, jazz band, drumline, orchestra and concert band are desirable
• Plans a balanced music program and organizes daily classes so that preparation, instruction, and
rehearsal can be accomplished within the allotted time
• Utilizes varied repertoire, including traditional and contemporary literature, that is appropriate for the ages
and demonstrated skill level of performers
• Evaluates, assesses and supports high-quality individual student development and performance
• Maintains accurate inventory over school-owned instruments, music, uniforms and equipment to prevent
loss and to assess for repair and replacement
• Makes minor adjustments and requests repairs for instruments as required
• Selects and requisitions appropriate music, books, instruments and instructional aids, to enhance
learning
• Meets with other District music teachers in planning for District music programs
• Collaborates with site staff to provide multiple performance opportunities for students to showcase their
skills for their peers and parents
• Implements high quality learning and teaching strategies to inspire best practice
• Establishes and maintains appropriate standards for student behavior to provide an orderly, productive
environment during individual practice, group rehearsals, and musical performances
• Connects curricular content to the California Arts Standards

equipment
• Positive relationships are evident, procedures are clear, and the classroom is safe and secure for
learning
• Student and teacher interactions promote a growth mindset and student talents are cultivated

• Maintains an organized, clean environment
Professional Responsibilities:
• Participates in staff meetings and committees, as assigned
• Actively participates in Professional Learning Communities to improve teaching and learning
• Reflects on instruction and goal setting with assigned Coach/Mentor
• Maintains professional competence through in-service training provided by the District and/or through selfselected
professional development activities
• Completes all District requests including but not limited to inventory, reporting, communicating with
parents and staff and completing contractual obligations

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Education:
Possession of a baccalaureate or higher degree with emphasis in an academic major or minor
subject matter fields with the needed courses to meet credential requirements.
Credential(s): Possession of a valid California Single Subject Music Teaching Credential with an English
Learner Authorization
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position must
perform in carrying out the essential functions of the position.
Physical Demands: Sit, stand, reach, look down, turn neck (frequently); walk, bend, stoop, squat, push, pull,
climb stairs, reach above shoulders (occasionally); kneel, crawl, lay down, use foot controls (infrequently);
lift/carry items to 10 pounds (frequently), to 25 pounds (occasionally) and 26 - 90 pounds (students, in
emergencies); grasp/manipulate materials and supplies (frequently); use seeing, hearing and speaking
(continuously).
Working Conditions: Indoor classrooms, outdoor school yard and grounds. Exposure to: student and
playground noise, communicable diseases, unruly students, air conditioning, seasonal temperatures, dust,
wind, pesticides and possible smog.
