POSITION SUMMARY:

The Engineering Specialist role assists the Engineering staff in executing project related work in the areas of automation equipment, mold tooling, and 3D printing.  Plan, lay out, and perform a variety of complicated machine and bench operations connected with the construction, alteration, fitting, assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of all types of specialized mold tooling, jigs, fixtures, automation parts and gages.  Perform rapid prototyping and experimental work.  Use 3D programming software to design, create and prepare models, and print them on metal and plastic 3D printers. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Must be able to read and comprehend blueprints and technical data.  Must also be able to identify and communicate dimensional and tolerance issues effectively.
  • Able to design, create and manipulate 3D CAD models as needed.
  • Must be able to machine complex components from drawings and/or 3D CAD to very close tolerances like +/-.0001”.
  • Make correct decisions as to fits, finishes, machining, and assembly sequences.  Work out mechanisms and details maintaining very close tolerances and interrelationships. 
  • Operations require skilled bench work involving filing, scraping, grinding, lapping, fitting, timing, assembling, and adjusting in order to produce workable parts and units. Be familiar with jig bore machine utilization on die and large work inspections.
  • Be able to work independently on complex jobs and able to communicate and confer about the solution to specific problems.
  • Able to manage small projects within the immediate organization.
  • Document designs, work instructions, and procedures within Edgewell documentation systems.
  • Write reports and summaries of experimental work, equipment tests and evaluations performed.
  • Present findings/results to key stakeholders.
  • Communicate and interact with vendors as necessary.
  • Maintain and run steel 3D printers and plastic 3D printers.  Keep records of the maintenance performed.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on molds and machines including use of the 3D steel printer for the fabrication and repair of detail parts.
  • Be able to design mold splits, build, modify, and setup prototype molds in engineering’s Technology Center.
  • Support short production runs on molding equipment with setup, troubleshooting, and process adjustments.
  • Be willing to learn and operate other equipment around molding and assembly machines such as hot runner controllers, robots etc.
  • Maintain work area in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Need to be willing to travel to other facilities as needed.
  • Operate a machine tool while standing for a period of ten to twelve hours and use hands to reach overhead to perform necessary functions.
  • Be able to use both hands coordinately in a sitting and/or standing position to operate a surface grinder.
  • Be able to bend, stand, and climb in order to assemble machines, tools, dies, and/or molds.
  • Be able to move (push, pull, or otherwise manipulate) materials up to 75 lbs.
  • Perform other duties and/or tasks as assigned by manager.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree in related field or actively enrolled in an accredited program and 3 years of related experience, OR high school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) plus 7 years’ experience as a Toolmaker or Mechanical Technician.
  • Completion of a recognized Tool & Die Apprenticeship program or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the fabrication, assembly, repair, maintenance of molds, fixtures, and assembly equipment.
  • Ability to use machining equipment such as Mills, Lathes, Grinders, and 3D metal printers with machining capability to fabricate and/or repair high tolerance steel components (including core and cavity details).  Capability with EDM and CNC machines, including 5-axis machining centers, are a plus.
  • SolidWorks experience is a plus.
  • Experience with Mastercam and Lumex Cam are a plus.
  • Prior 3D steel and plastic printing experience is a plus.
  • Microsoft Office computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)

 

Salary Range:  STLG10 - Starting from $33.81 per hour, based on experience.
