We are seeking candidates with a passion for scientific research, excellent academic performance, communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work in a multi-functional environment. A strong science background in applied cheminformatics is highly preferred. Applicants with previous research experience in the listed areas are highly preferred. You will be provided with laptops/equipment etc. as necessary to perform the role. This is a paid co-op position targeted to start either in March 2024 or June 2024 and runs for 4-6 months. Potential involvement in a scientific publication may occur as a result of the research undertaken during the internship.
The Discovery Chemistry organization is offering a co-op position in the following discipline:
Modeling & Informatics (M&I) (West Point, PA; Rahway, NJ)
The candidate will participate in molecular design cheminformatics research, in collaboration with the peptide modeling team, peptide discovery chemistry and process chemistry teams. The candidate will learn how to employ data, models, and methods to drive the expansion of building blocks for next-generation of peptide therapeutics and will be exposed to many areas of research relevant to the drug discovery and development process. Prior experience with peptide design using non-canonical amino acids and working knowledge of SMILES and SMARTS will be beneficial, but is not essential.

Required Education, Experience and Skills:
- Candidates must be pursuing BS/BA or Master's/Ph.D. degree in related field with demonstrated research experience in areas relevant to cheminformatics, Computational Chemistry, molecular modeling, peptide or medicinal chemistry
- Candidates must have completed at least three years of studies toward BS/BA degree or at least 1 year towards Master's/PhD at time of co-op (Summer 2024)
- Candidates must be currently enrolled in an academic program at the time of the application and be continuing education for at least 1 semester once co-op completes (Fall 2024)
- Applicants must be available for full-time employment for a period of 4-6 months, with the option to select a preferred start date in March 2024 or June 2024.
- Demonstrated research experience in the fields of cheminformatics, Computational Chemistry, molecular modeling, peptide or medicinal chemistry
- Experience with large scale data mining, visualization, and analysis
- Proficiency in Python for scientific computing, scripting languages and using high performance computing (HPC) environments
- Highly self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and communication (oral and written) skills
Preferred Experience and Skills:
- Experience with large scale data mining, visualization, and analysis
- Experience with Python toolkits such as OEChem, RDKit, scikit-learn
- Working knowledge of SMILES and SMARTS
- Experience with peptide design and modeling
- Knowledge of non-canonical amino acids
Under New York City, Colorado State, Washington State, and California State law, the Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate's relevant skills, experience, and education.
Expected salary range:
$39,600.00 - $105,500.00
