Description
Eligibility
The 2L internship program receives law student applicants who will have completed one full year of law school prior to their internship start date. If you are a law student in good standing who will have completed two full years of law school prior to the internship start date, please consider our 3L internship program.
The 18th is the largest DA's office in the state, representing four counties and over a million Coloradans, almost 300,000 more than next largest office. We are committed to advocating for victims' rights and promoting public safety. Our mission is to seek justice with integrity in all cases within the 18th Judicial District. The office prosecutes criminal offenses professionally, ethically, and vigorously.
As a result of our size, we offer many specialized units other DA offices do not. In addition to general misdemeanor, juvenile, and felony units, our office has units and teams of prosecutors dedicated to Appeals, Cold Cases, Conviction Integrity, Domestic Violence, Economic Crimes, Elder and At-Risk Victims, Hate Crimes, Human Trafficking, Organized Crime, Problem Solving Courts, Special Victims, and Vehicular Homicides.
We Provide Practical Experience
Our 2L internship program offers law students a unique opportunity to conduct meaningful work on real criminal cases. We offer two separate tracks from which to choose: Appellate and District Court. Our District Court interns work closely with our trial attorneys working at the felony level, assisting in all aspects of the work necessary to bring serious and complex criminal cases to trial. Our Appellate interns work closely with the attorneys in our appeals unit, conducting legal research and refining their legal writing skills by drafting corresponding briefs that are submitted to the District Court, Colorado Court of Appeals, and Colorado Supreme Court. Regardless of the track chosen, interns in our 2L program do not need to wait until graduation to begin making a positive impact in their community.
We Train for the Future
Our 2L internship program is designed for law students contemplating a career in criminal prosecution. We train and mentor our 2L interns with the goal of preparing them to return as 3L interns working and trying cases under the Student Practice Act. Our 3L interns are trained and mentored with the goal of returning to our office as deputy district attorneys.
Job Duties
The following essential job functions and examples of duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive; positions assigned to this class may not perform all of the duties listed.
District Court Internships
Working alongside our experienced prosecutors, interns in our District Court program can expect to become involved in all aspects of criminal prosecution from the investigative stage through trial. This will include cases involving murder, sexual assault, aggravated robbery, and other violent crime. Interns will have opportunities to research novel and interesting legal issues, assist in drafting corresponding pleadings, observe courtroom proceedings where those issues are litigated, review new felony filings for potential evidentiary challenges, and preparing exhibits for trial. In addition to assisting our district court teams, interns will also have opportunities to work with our more specialized units listed above.
Appellate Internships
Appellate interns conduct research regarding an array of complex issues pertaining to criminal law. With the guidance of our experienced appellate attorneys, interns review trial court records, conduct legal research, and draft corresponding legal briefs. Issues arising out of county court (traffic and misdemeanor cases) are briefed in the District Court. Issues arising out of the District Court are briefed in the Colorado Court of Appeals and Colorado Supreme Court. Appellate interns may also be called upon to assist with the creation of template motions or legal memoranda that are distributed to assist our various prosecution units.
