2024 DNA-Encoded Library Chemist Internship Overview

Envision spending your summer working with energetic colleagues and inspirational leaders, all while gaining world-class experience in one of the most dynamic organizations in the pharmaceutical industry. This is a reality for AbbVie Interns.

 

The intern will join AbbVie's DNA Encoded Library (DEL) in the Small Molecule Therapeutic and Platform Technology (SMTPT) organization, located in North Chicago, IL. The focus of the internship is to synthesize on-DNA bifunctional compounds and design a DEL affinity screen model system to induce protein-protein associations. The intern will work in concert with cross-functional and interdisciplinary teams and will have the opportunity to gain valuable experience in the DEL field.

Key responsibilities include:

       Employ state-of-the-art DEL Chemistry methods to synthesize and purify on-DNA conjugates.

       Gain hands-on experience in analysis of on-DNA conjugates, DNA quantification, and other molecular biology techniques.

       Assist DEL Scientists in carrying out Model DEL selections.

       Design, execute, analyze, and present hypothesis driven experiments.

Minimum Qualifications 

       Currently enrolled in university, pursuing a Master's degree or PhD in Chemistry or other related field.

       Must be enrolled in university for at least one semester following the internship.

 

Preferred Qualifications

       Expected graduation date between December 2024 - July 2025.

       Sufficient theoretical and experimental background in Organic Synthesis with a focus on reaction optimization and methodology development.

       Skills in synthesis, purification, and characterization of organic compounds.

       Experience working with analytical and purification tools such as LCMS and HPLC.

       Motivation to learn about DNA-encoded libraries and associated techniques.
