Job description

The Role:
The Moderna Research Co-op program is a 6-month experiential training program for students currently working towards an undergraduate or advanced degree in life sciences. During the co-op you will learn about the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and gain valuable hands-on experience in one of the most bold and relentless companies currently leading the field in mRNA-LNP science. You will work under the supervision of an experienced Moderna team member and have opportunities for cross-team collaboration, networking, and mentorship. You will develop laboratory skills and learn about lab safety, experimental design, scientific strategy, and record keeping.
If you are bold, relentless, collaborative and obsess over learning, a co-op at Moderna will help augment your research experience and accelerate your career.
Our Summer/Fall co-op program is from July 15th – December 13th, 2024 . All applicants must be available for the entire duration of the program.
Here’s What You’ll Do:
As a co-op in the Infectious Disease Research (IDR) research team at Moderna you will join a team focused on antigen characterization and automation. The team is part of a large group responsible for Antigen Design and selection using a broad range of expertise and methodology to discover and advance vaccine candidates through pre-clinical discovery and ultimately to development for clinical trials. The mission of the antigen characterization team is to accelerate and scale antigen screening efforts using state-of-the-art automation. With your help we are aiming to achieve this ambitious goal during 2024.
During your co-op assignment you will join a multi-disciplinary team using cell-based assays including high-throughput flow cytometry to characterize bacterial and viral antigens. You will work with your colleagues to implement this assay on a fully automated analytics platform where the goal is to transform a highly laborious manual process to one that is fully automated in a true “walk-away” sense. You will therefore have a unique opportunity to learn about and contribute to multiple areas: Antigen Design and selection, mRNA/DNA cellular assay development, automation using liquid handlers, robots, scheduling software and automated data analysis tools. Experience in any of these areas would be very welcome but full training will be provided as needed.
Your specific activities will include the following:
Passage and expand human cell lines (eg: Expi293) for automation applications.
Assist in inventory preparation of consumables, samples, and reagents for automation experiments.
Perform routine screening experiments on an automation platform.
Design, perform, and troubleshoot process optimization experiments on an automation platform.
Collaborate with a team of liquid handling engineers to optimize existing methods and develop new ones.
Document experimental results and present team-based data to discuss and plan follow-up experiments.
Utilize an ELN to capture experimental results.
Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table:
Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or advanced degree program in biomedical sciences (biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, biotechnology, chemistry, immunology, microbiology) or similar field of study.
Basic knowledge of basic lab procedures and safety requirements
Technical experience in any of the following areas desired: cell culture, DNA/mRNA transfections, flow cytometry, Hamilton Venus scripting, assay development and troubleshooting.
Prior co-op or internship experience is preferred but not required
Self-motivated , enthusiastic, and possess the desire to drive a project to completion.
Flexible and capable of working in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
Legal authorization to work in the US

  • Volunteer time to participate within your community
  • D iscretionary year-end shutdown
