America Reads students are oriented and trained to provide children, in grades K through 3rd grade, with one-on-one instruction in reading, phonics, and comprehension. Tutoring sessions are designed to assist elementary school children with improving their reading skills. A position as an America Reads tutor has the potential to be extremely fun and rewarding for the tutors and the students both.
This internship opportunity will have an employee supervisor guiding and mentoring student throughout the experience. Student and Supervisor must review learning goals and objectives and participate in a formal meeting at the midpoint and end of the semester to discuss and complete Student Evaluation and Employer Evaluation.
By the end of the internship, student will have gained valuable practical experience, learned how to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, and experienced real life challenges and situations.

- Complete all required paperwork (back ground checks, time-sheets and evaluations) accurately and on time.
- Transportation is required in order to travel to the assigned elementary school.
Who May Apply
- Students enrolled at FIU, who have been awarded Federal Work Study (FWS) as part of their Financial Aid Award package.
- Student must be enrolled with a minimum of six (6) credit hours in a course of study leading to a degree or a Financial Aid eligible certificate, during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
- Upon credits decreasing, award being canceled, or graduating, FWS employment must end.
Work Schedule
Hours will vary based on class schedule and needs of the department.
