Works cooperatively with staff members to develop and implement effective educational programs and to deliver appropriate services to students.

POSITION SUMMARY

Occupational Therapy is mandated as a related service under Federal Law 101-457 (Individuals with Disabilities Act). The Occupational Therapist is a member of the interdisciplinary educational team who works toward the development of skills needed for the occupation of being a student: participation in work, play, and independent living activities. Children are aided to fulfill their role as students by supporting their academic achievement and promoting positive behaviors necessary for learning.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Implements programs designed to support students by maintaining records and adjusting based on student performance.
  • Assess the functional performance of students with disabilities within the school environment, interpret assessment results appropriately, and use the results to develop therapeutic, educational intervention plans.
  • Evaluate preschool and school-aged students and develop a compliant initial or re-evaluation Evaluation Team Report (ETR) documenting the results of evaluations/observations. Reports should include strengths of students, implications deficits have on education, and accommodations/recommendations to address documented sensorimotor difficulties as per the planning form.
  • Reports should be concise and professionally written and use language which is user-friendly for teachers and parents.
    Write compliant Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for all assigned students including, but not limited to, a summary of abilities in the profile, goals and objectives, and a summary of services provided. Goals and objectives need to be measurable and educationally relevant. IEP time commitments and location of therapy services are appropriate to students' needs and least restrictive environment.
  • Develop and implement therapeutic and educational interventions which support IEP goals and objectives and are educationally relevant. Therapy sessions are planned to be in alignment with the service delivery levels as specified within Section 7 & 11 of the student's IEP.
  • Complete student consultations and observations as requested by staff, families, or MTSS building teams. Write compliant and educationally relevant summary and recommendations of the consultation/observation and ensure all team members receive a copy of this report. Permission must be obtained from caregivers prior to initiating a student observation. Upload this report and permission to Infinite Campus.
  • Complete OT-PT Department Referral Spreadsheet for all initial evaluations and consultation/observations.
  • Document student progress and performance in daily Medicaid/MSP notes in a compliant and timely manner according to district and state guidelines and department procedure.

  • Attend IEP/ETR meetings or contact educational team lead and provide a written summary of therapist information if schedule does not permit attendance.
  • Complete Plan of Care documentation according to department guidelines.
  • Maintain digital student files in Infinite Campus including updating plans of care, sensory permission forms, IEP work samples, request for assistance/permission to review, consultation/observation summary reports, and discontinuance information according to department policy.
  • Supervise COTAs as assigned. OT must hold supervisory/collaboration meetings on a monthly basis (at a minimum). Must complete and sign a COTA supervision log on a monthly basis.

  • Mentor new OTs as assigned. OT must hold supervisory/collaboration meetings on a monthly basis (at a minimum).

  • Supervise and mentor OT students on a voluntary basis. OT must hold supervisory/collaboration meetings per AOTA, university and departmental guidelines for student supervision.

  • Discuss procedural concerns or liability issues with OTPT supervisor(s) and receive guidance.

  • Check out and return equipment to department home base, according to department guidelines.

  • Attend monthly department meetings and other procedural meetings as required by OTPT supervisor(s). Arrive at designated time.

  • Participate in Professional Learning Communities or other peer to peer professional development, according to department procedures.

  • Maintain therapeutic equipment according to department procedures.

  • Adhere to confidentiality as related to FERPA.
    Manage one's own schedule to ensure consistency of student interventions.

  • Familiar with basic computer functions.
    Attend district and department-sponsored professional development.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders.
  • Ability to participate and actively engage as an effective team member across district, building, and departmental teams.
  • Ability to communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with educational personnel, student caregivers, local and state agencies, and the community at large.
  • Ability to facilitate transition among agencies, programs, and professionals as service provisions change (early intervention to preschool, preschool to school age, and school to post-secondary options)
  • Knowledge of the educational system and its crucial components including federal and state regulations and ethical/legal responsibilities, applying to OTs in the educational setting.

 

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: 

  • Bachelor's Degree required.Must maintain a current Ohio license in Occupational Therapy (OCR 4755.01B)
  • Must maintain a valid Ohio Teaching certificate/license issued by the State Department of Education

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master's Degree in Speech & Language Pathology from an accredited university 
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech Language Hearing Association preferred 
  • Valid Ohio Board of Speech Pathology and Audiology Speech Language Pathology License or Conditional License 
  • Valid Ohio Department of Education Pupil Services License
  • Must have access to dependable transportation in order to serve students throughout the Columbus City School District
  • Master's Degree preferred
  • Pediatric or school-based experience preferred
