Description of Work Unit
The Office of Engagement and Extension (OEE) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU’s engagement and outreach missions. OEE includes CSU Extension, CSU Extended Campus (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension (VPEE) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. OEE works collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus, and has strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US and globally. At any given time, OEE includes over 400 employees. The total of budgets is approximately $85 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE’s leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Annually, CSU Extended Campus garners enrollments of over 10,000 learners and CSU Extension delivers approximately 500,000 educational contacts.

For more than 50 years, CSU Extended Campus, an enterprise division of Colorado State University which includes CSU Online, has been delivering online and distance programs developed at the flagship research campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. CSU Extended Campus provides affordable access to a high-quality education from wherever students call home around the nation and world, on a schedule that fits their lives. CSU’s distance students receive the same education, learn from the same faculty, and earn the same regionally accredited degree as students on the Fort Collins campus. CSU Extended Campus offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degrees and 35 for-credit certificate programs, delivered online and at locations across Colorado, as well as hundreds of professional education noncredit courses, digital badge programs, and open lifelong learning courses.
CSU Extended Campus is a center of innovation at the university, supporting not only the development of online and distance courses and programs but also the enhancement of campus instruction. CSU Extended Campus has a staff of over 80 professionals delivering educational programs and services through CSU Online, Professional Education (non-credit programs), Collaboration Campuses, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. This position serves each of those entities as part of a 24-person Learning Production and Training team. CSU Extended Campus collaborates closely with the colleges, departments, and divisions across the university, with other universities in the CSU System, and with government, business, non-profit organizations as well as other educational institutions.

Position Summary
The Course Developer position works collaboratively with instructional designers, videographers, and instructors to build online courses that improve student learning and follow best practices. This role presents an opportunity to develop courses independently with subject matter experts, as well as work as part of a development team providing support to colleagues. The successful candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of instructional issues related to teaching and learning in hybrid and online courses, as well as experience using a wide range of hardware and software tools to develop instructional materials.
The Course Developer will join a team that works collaboratively to support the teaching and learning mission of the University, reporting to an Instructional Design Manager on the Learning Production and Training team in the CSU Office of Engagement and Extension. This position will report to campus in Fort Collins at least one day per week and as requested by the supervisor, with the potential for flexible work arrangements, including hybrid work.

Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in educational technology, instructional design, education, or closely related field.
  • Experience developing instructional materials for learning management systems (e.g., Canvas, Blackboard, Sakai, Moodle).

Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in instructional design, curriculum and instruction, educational technology, instructional systems, education, or a closely related field.
  • Fluency in either Chinese or Spanish.
  • Strong understanding of instructional design models and principles, educational theory, and instructional technology.
  • Familiarity with processes relevant to the development of course curricula and instructional materials for credit and non-credit courses.
  • Experience training others, especially faculty, to use online learning technologies.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the higher education environment and experience working successfully with university faculty/subject matter experts.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as an individual contributor and member of a multiple internal and external teams and organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize, work independently, and meet strict deadlines.
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal communication skills.
