Health Educator
The Fund for Public Health in New York City (FPHNYC) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that is dedicated to the advancement of the health and well-being of all New Yorkers. To this end, in partnership with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), FPHNYC incubates innovative public health initiatives implemented by DOHMH to advance community health throughout the city. It facilitates partnerships, often new and unconventional, between government and the private sector to develop, test, and launch new initiatives. These collaborations speed the execution of demonstration projects, effect expansion of successful pilot programs, and support rapid implementation to meet the public health needs of individuals, families, and communities across New York City.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD), part of the Division of Disease Control, is composed of seven units/programs which are responsible for monitoring and investigating 73 infectious diseases including viral hepatitis, foodborne, waterborne, vector-borne and zoonotic diseases. BCD also monitors and analyzes trends in disease data and provides consultation to the medical community and the public on the recognition, prevention and control of communicable diseases. BCD is currently supporting the citywide COVID-19 response under the DOHMH's Incident Command System.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking to fill 1 Health Educator positions in the Congregate Settings Investigation and Response Unit in the Surveillance and Epidemiology Branch while activated for COVID-19 response and in the Enterics, Waterborne, Health Education Unit in the Bureau of Communicable Disease (BCD). The Health Educators will provide key support for the Agency's work of preventing the spread of infectious diseases such as COVID-19, by providing outreach, education and training to congregate settings such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, community and faith based organizations and other public programs as necessary. Health Educators will also assist with outbreak investigations in New York City as needed. It is expected that each Public Health Advisor will work up to 35 hours per week.
The Health Educator will perform outreach to community organizations and public programs to deliver health education materials in-person, by telephone and online meetings/webinars. The selected candidates will conduct presentations related to improving health and preventing illness through measures such as vaccine confidence building, hand and respiratory hygiene measures, and proper infection control practices. The selected candidates may conduct focus groups to solicit ideas about how best to target health education outreach. The selected candidate will also conduct data entry and data management, and will assist with program development and evaluation as necessary.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Implementation of the Project Firstline grant activities
  • Lead for CSIRU/BCD work to address issues around health disparities and racial equity
  • Outreach to congregate settings, residential programs, community-based organizations and public programs.
  • Assist with creating and delivering culturally sensitive and appropriate presentations on the prevention of COVID-19 and trainings on infection control and prevention best practices.
  • Assist with identifying and addressing issues around health disparities, health literacy and racial equity in health education initiatives and messaging.
  • Assist in planning and implementation of special projects related to COVID 19 related prevention, infection control and prevention.
  • Represent the Bureau of Communicable Disease at community events and health fairs.
  • Write outreach evaluation summaries.
  • Organize health education materials, and maintain inventory for the materials.
  • Create a filing system and shred confidential documents.
  • Perform data entry and/or miscellaneous projects.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma; OR Associate's degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by twelve semester credits in health education, or in health, social, or biological sciences; OR a degree from an accredited college and 6 months of full-time satisfactory experience in health promotion or disease intervention/prevention program, performing one or more of the following: interviewing, health education presentations, assessing health risks, making referrals, or collecting and analyzing data.
  • Education and/or experience equivalent to qualification listed above.

SALARY
  • Salary range is $65,000 to $71,000

9:00 am - 5:00 pm

RESIDENCY REQUIREMENY
You must live in New York City Tri-state area (NY, NJ, CT) in order to be considered for a position at FPHNYC.
