Job description

Job Summary
As the Antibody Specialist, the incumbent is responsible for the daily function of the antibody section of the laboratory. This includes prioritizing of samples, ensuring adherence to established turnaround times, verifying the adequacy of reagents and consumables, monitoring quality control testing on reagents and instruments before their use with patient samples, addressing and resolving instrument issues, handling and resolving problems within their expertise, escalating issues beyond their expertise to the supervisor and/or director. Additionally, the incumbent reviews and approves results for reporting, serving as the principal reviewer, approver, and reporter of antibody results. They also sign off reports for other test areas such as HLA typing, KIR genotyping, crossmatching, and/or chimerism testing.
In addition to the supervisor, manager, and director, the incumbent serves as the subject matter expert for antibody methods. The incumbent stays updated on relevant literature to ensure that the laboratory possesses cutting-edge knowledge, skills, and methods for performing antibody testing, including exploring its potential application for other tests. Additionally, the incumbent serves as the primary support for other technologists assigned to perform antibody-related tasks in the laboratory.

Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from college with a major in an appropriate scientific field, possession of a clinical laboratory scientist license, or a similar license of equal or higher level issued by the California Department of Health.
  • At least 6 years work experience in performing clinical histocompatibility testing.
  • Must be able to perform on-call duties including reporting to the laboratory within an hour of notice or call.
  • Must be able to work variable shifts as required by laboratory operations including weekends, nights, and early mornings.
  • Accurate and be able to process multiple samples without switches.
  • Be able to work with personal computers.
  • Must be effective as a member of a team.
  • Proven record of being reliable and be able to multi-task.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Proficient in communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Tidy and orderly.

Preferred Qualifications
  • A minimum of 6 years relevant experience as a licensed technologist in a clinical histocompatibility laboratory; 2 of which are in HLA antibody testing by various methods (e.g., Luminex Bead-Based and Solid-Phase Assays).
  • Experience with QC/QA/QS in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Working knowledge of antigens and genetics of the HLA system and be able to interpret results correctly.
  • Advance degree in a relevant field (e.g., Immunology, Biochemistry, and/or Genetics).

License/Certification
  • Current California license as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) Generalist or Clinical Histocompatibility Scientist (CHS) or equivalent.
