Zoo Worker - Horticulture (Seasonal)
Department - Zoological
(Seasonal - Summers)
Job Summary: Maintains and preserves horticultural and botanical facilities using sound horticultural practices; maintains and preserves the urban forest using sound arboriculture practices; preserves and educates visitors; preserves and enhances department assets; ensures quality service and product delivery, all which adds value to our guests experience here at the zoo.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Flower bed and tree maintenance - Plant, replant, clean, and maintain annual and perennial flower beds throughout the zoo grounds. Plant, replant, and maintain trees and shrubs throughout zoo grounds.

  • Watering - Water the flowers, grass, plants, and trees throughout zoo grounds on a regular schedule throughout the entire growing season. This includes maintaining and watering 3 greenhouses on grounds.

  • Landscaping - Operate weed whips, tillers and other small equipment, prune, plant, weed, and invasive plant removal, top dress, seed and water and fertilize as needed. Spread mulch in flower beds, around trees and other locations as needed. Work with the animal department on exhibit planning, renovation, and set up.

  • Event Decorating - Horticulture staff is responsible for all holiday set ups, and specific special event set ups. Decorating includes holiday lights and ornaments in Christmas trees, all Halloween decorations, lights, scene set ups, carving and painting pumpkins, and other park decorations as needed.

  • Grounds maintenance - Seasonal maintenance of grounds- snow removal in winter, flower bed maintenance and litter and garbage pick-up as needed in summer, removing leaves in fall, and grounds clean up in spring.

  • Other - To provide information and direction to Zoo visitors, to lend assistance to other staff and Zoo visitors, other jobs and duties that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Eligible applicants must be at least 16 years of age upon application.
  • Must be 18 years of age to operate riding and landscape equipment.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
  • Lifting/Carrying 50 (lbs.)
  • Pushing/Pulling 75 (lbs.)

Licenses/Certifications -
  • Pesticide certification category 3.0 or 5.0 preferred.
  • Class B or A CDL driver's license preferred.
  • Forklift certified preferred.

Note: This Original Examination is open to all qualified applicants authorized to work in the United States. In accordance with Rule III section 11 of the Civil Service Rules a non-competitive examination will be held for this position. The non-competitive examination will consist of a review of candidate materials, education and related experience.
