Description
Under general supervision, performs daily work assignments for the Zoo Division of the Community Services Department, in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.
Recruitment Qualifications
Required:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • At least two (2) years of cashiering experience in a retail sales environment;
  • Valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain within 60 days, with a driving record acceptable to the City of Alamogordo (valid out-of-state license may be considered);
  • Or, any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Desired:
  • Previous experience as a key holder in a retail establishment that encompassed opening and closing responsibilities.

Essential Duties
  • Assists in the daily operation of the Alameda Park Zoo Gift Shop;
  • Responsible for opening and/or closing the GIFT SHOP on a regular basis;
  • Greets and assists the public by handling zoo admissions, and providing information on the location of exhibits, recreation programs, and memberships;
  • Operates cash registers, receives cash or other forms of payment, and makes accurate change, maintains security of cash and other payments by never leaving unattended;
  • Prepares and/or assists with accurately preparing daily deposits; and balances cash drawer for each shift worked;
  • Performs cleaning duties including, but not limited to, sweeping, mopping, dusting, washing windows; maintains the GIFT SHOP in a safe and sanitary manner;
  • Inspects GIFT SHOP facility on a regular basis to ensure proper maintenance and reports any discrepancies to supervisor;
  • Shelves new merchandise and restocks depleted items;
  • Coordinates on-site birthday parties or other user group events;
  • Efficiently and courteously handles telephone calls by answering questions, forwarding calls to the appropriate personnel, or by taking and distributing detailed messages;
  • Responsible for commissary duties including but not limited to: preparing daily diets specific to animal needs; tracking, ordering, and maintaining sufficient feed inventory; cleaning and sanitation duties;
  • Assists in administrative and clerical duties including, but not limited to, zoo social media, website, record keeping, logging animal diet information, medical records;
  • Contributes to a high-quality work culture through participation in training and mentoring to develop skills, including safety related training and skills;
  • Interacts professionally and provides excellent customer service to all levels of City staff and citizens, to ensure high operational and service standards; and
  • Performs duties in accordance with the Employee Manual, Department Policies and Procedures, City of Alamogordo Ordinances, and any applicable State or Federal authority.

OTHER IMPORTANT DUTIES
  • Irregular work hours including holidays, weekends, evenings, and special events, as needed;
  • Drive a City owned vehicle, as needed;
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information obtained during performance of duties; and
  • Performs such other duties as may be assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:

  • General cleaning techniques, including the safe and proper use of cleaning products.

Skill/Ability to:
  • Understand and follow instructions and directions;

  • Perform duties independently and with minimal supervision;
  • Ensure that opening and closing duties are performed responsibly;
  • Operate a cash register, accept money, and make change accurately;
  • Accurately manage and account for daily money receipts by reconciling the cash drawer;
  • Safely operate custodial equipment and perform cleaning tasks;
  • Coordinate birthday parties and other user group events;
  • Work well with others and participate fully in a team-oriented environment;
  • Interact with other employees and customers in a professional, courteous, and respectful manner;
  • Consistently project positive support of the Community Services Department and all City organizations;
  • Perform tasks and other daily activities in a positive and professional manner alongside employees of varied backgrounds and personalities;
  • Attend work, as scheduled and on a regular basis, to effectively perform the position's essential duties and responsibilities;

  • Maintain and enhance the Zoo's commitment to customer service excellence.

Work Environment
  • Risk of physical injury by exposure to potentially dangerous animals;
  • Most work is performed indoors at the Alameda Park Zoo Gift Shop;
  • Daily tasks require both sedentary and physical labor that include, but is not limited to, sitting, standing, walking, bending, squatting, turning, lifting and driving;
  • May be exposed to adverse weather conditions while conducting tasks away from the Gift Shop; the noise level outdoors may be moderate to loud;
  • Light to medium physical demands may be required including occasionally lifting and/or moving up to twenty-five (25) pounds; may lift and/or move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; the lifting of any object greater than fifty (50) pounds by a single individual is prohibited. Lifting objects, materials, or equipment weighing more than fifty (50) pounds require the buddy system or the use of devices designed to assist with lifting or moving. Proper lifting techniques shall be used when lifting items of any weight;
  • May be subject to repetitive motion while using personal computer and multi-line telephone;
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for field work such as assisting in the feeding of the animals: and
  • Position required to work a varied schedule that may include holidays, weekends, and special events.

PAY
Pay range is based on position.
INSURANCE BENEFITS
  • Medical and Dental coverage are paid 60% by the employer and 40% by the employee.
  • A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided at no cost to the employee.
  • Vision and Disability coverage are available at 100% of the cost being paid by the employee.

  • 457 Deferred Compensation Plan is available voluntarily, with all contributions being made by the employee.
RETIREMENT
The City of Alamogordo participates in the New Mexico Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA).
The following information pertains to a member of the PERA plan on or after July 1, 2013 (Tier 2):
PERA Retirement Plan Tier 2
  • 85 or age 65 with five (5) years of service
  • Five (5) year vesting period
  • 90% pension maximum (2% pension factor)
  • Five (5) year final average salary calculation
  • Employee contribution equals 7.05% pre-tax
  • Employer total contribution equals 15.40%
  • Retiree health, NM plan, requires a 1% employee contribution

PAID HOLIDAYS
Ten (10) paid Holiday days per year (New Year's, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day).
FLOATING HOLIDAY
One (1) Floating Holiday per fiscal year.
PTO
Employees begin accruing Paid Time Off ( PTO) immediately. For the first five (5) years an employee can earn 21.5 days per year. Accrual rates increase incrementally after five (5) years of service and based on subsequent service years.
PTO is available for use after the introductory period is successfully completed.
PTO cash-out options based on accrued balance.
