Position Details
The Zebrafish Fish Care Assistant at SARL is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of zebrafish colonies used in scientific research. This role plays a crucial part in ensuring the well-being of the zebrafish and supporting ongoing research activities. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in animal care, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
- Breeding Support (25%): Assist in zebrafish breeding activities, including setting up mating pairs, monitoring spawning behavior, and collecting and caring for embryos.
- Facility Maintenance (25%): Assist with general maintenance tasks within the zebrafish facility, such as equipment cleaning, organization of supplies, and disposal of biohazard waste.
- Daily Feeding and Monitoring (20%): Ensure zebrafish colonies are fed according to schedule and monitor their feeding behavior to ensure adequate nutrition.
- Tank Maintenance (20%): Clean zebrafish tanks regularly to maintain water quality and prevent the buildup of waste. This includes water changes, gravel vacuuming, and removal of uneaten food.
- Health Monitoring (5%): Conduct routine health checks on zebrafish to identify any signs of illness or abnormalities. Report any concerns to the supervisor and assist with implementing necessary treatment protocols.
- Collaboration (5%): Work collaboratively with other members of the research team to support ongoing experiments and projects involving zebrafish.
- Compliance: Adhere to all relevant regulations and guidelines for the care and use of laboratory animals, including those set forth by SARL and regulatory agencies.
- Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
- Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
- Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
- High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
- Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
- Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
- Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
- Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
- International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
- Current Student at Oregon State University
- Reliable transportation required. We are located 2 miles from campus.
- Able to lift/carry up to 20 pounds (fish tanks)
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow standard operating procedures.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and ability to effectively interact with colleagues.
- Must be able to work one weekend day
- Previous experience working with zebrafish or other aquatic species preferred.
- Candidates must not have any aquatic habitats at home to prevent potential cross-contamination.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

- Some tasks may require lifting and carrying moderate loads (up to 20 lbs) and working in awkward positions.
