Cary's Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources team is seeking a visionary, enthusiastic, and people-focused program supervisor to provide leadership in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of youth programming and community camps. The ideal candidate will be a strong collaborator and innovator, able to provide a unified vision for youth programming and skilled in partnering with others to ensure a seamless participant experience. We are looking for someone to build upon the success of our youth camps and programs and expand our overall impact, while maintaining the standard of excellence and engagement citizens expect from Cary.
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Community Center Program and Operations Coordinator. Supervision is exercised over 10-80 part-time staff, depending on the season.
This position requires a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends to implement programs, trainings, or special events.

  • Leads programming staff in the planning and facilitation of YOUTH PROGRAMS, summer camps, and track out camps;
  • Provides support and oversight over the program schedule, program staffing, and associated registration procedures;
  • Creates and maintains consistent policies, guidelines, practices, and training for camps;
  • Integrates community feedback and knowledge of trends and best practices to bring innovation to youth program offerings and explore new opportunities;
  • Collaborates with staff across the department and town to build high-quality youth programming;
  • Promotes an inclusive environment and collaborates with inclusion services to deliver exceptional experiences to all;
  • Hires, trains, and supervises temporary and seasonal part-time staff, program instructors, contractor staff, and/or volunteers; may exercise supervision over full-time program staff;
  • Establishes and enforces rules and procedures for safe, efficient, and effective operation of our programs;
  • Projects, requests, tracks, and oversees budgetary needs for programming;
  • Ensures accurate program data entry and information pertaining to class participation, registration, and facility revenues;
  • Maintains knowledge of organizations, trends, and issues in youth recreation programming;
  • Implements program evaluation and tracks participation and level of participant satisfaction;
  • Prepares promotional material, coordinates social media posts, and manages website content for all related programs and events;
  • Coordinates, proofs, and submits brochure information for the program registration system;
  • Manages contracts for camp services and programs including transportation, field trips and vendors;
  • Supports coordination of CPR training for department staff;
  • Assists with implementing other recreation programs and special events in support of a OneCary culture;
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required.
Comprehensive knowledge of youth program and camp trends and industry best practices; general knowledge of summer camp best practices (American Camp Association standards knowledge preferred); general knowledge of training methods, scheduling, and delivery; knowledge of budgeting; knowledge of common computer software; ability to supervise staff and resolve personnel challenges; ability and comfort in learning and navigating new computer software; ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage a variety of customer, staff, and work demands; ability to communicate effectively and relate to a wide range of constituents; ability to interact tactfully and professionally with the public, coworkers and employees; ability to analyze and improve processes and procedures; ability and willingness to drive a 15 passenger vehicle with youth.Requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a four-year degree with major course work in recreation management, parks and recreation, or a related field.
Requires at least four years of experience working in public recreation programs.
Requires at least four years of supervisory experience with full-time or part-time staff.
Requires CPR and First Aid training (or willingness to obtain within 6 months)
Conditions of Employment
Requires possession of a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.
