Job description

Within this role the candidate will promote ACPL's values and mission while following established policies and procedures. The purpose of this position is to serve the informational, reference and reading needs to library patrons of all ages at ACPL and will be expected to perform any and all routine tasks necessary to the operation of the library system. This position works under the supervision of the Community Engagement Librarian. This position is a full-time, 40 hours per week, benefitted position. While most hours are Monday - Friday, monthly weekend or evening hours are required. This position will be scheduled to work at other library branches throughout Alamance County on a regular basis.

The best candidate will possess a strong commitment to provide customer-focused service for a positive library experience and to relate tactfully and courteously with a wide range of diverse patrons and community members.

Essential Functions of the Job/Responsibilities

  • Work with staff to plan, organize & implement appropriate Youth Programming
  • Plan and present engaging and age-appropriate summer learning programming
  • Responsible for purchasing youth collection items in coordination with the Collection Development Librarian
  • Assist, cultivate and maintain partnerships with local schools, childcare providers and other youth related organizations to promote reading and digital literacy
  • Assist with the library's community engagement efforts
  • Identify library & literacy outreach opportunities and stay informed of activities and services for children and families within the community
  • Increase skills and knowledge through professional reading workshops and webinars
  • Regular public service duties include staffing all service desks
  • Troubleshoot minor technology related issues, keeping management aware of issues

Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Attends conferences, workshops and reads professional literature to stay informed on issues related to children's library services and creative learning opportunities
  • Manage ACPL social media accounts
  • Take initiative in developing solutions to perceived issues and present plans to supervisors
  • Participate in Outreach events as needed
  • Driving the BookMARK or personal vehicle to outreach events
  • Other duties as assigned

Position Specific Examples/Requirements of the Job

  • Maintain safe driving record and report vehicle problems or accidents to supervisory staff
  • Must be at least 21 years of age per insurance guidelines
  • May be required to submit to random drug testing

Education & Experience

  • MLIS
    1. Or some college with 2 to 3 years of library experience working in a children's programming role is required
  • Experience working with children in a formal setting is required
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required
  • Ability to think quickly, handle interruptions, maintain self-control, and adapt to stressful situations with children and their adults is preferred
  • Ability to equally engage with children of all abilities and backgrounds with a patient, enthusiastic, and genuine demeanor is required
  • Ability to work with individuals of diverse populations with respect and equitable service is required
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication is required
  • Ability to speak Spanish is preferred

Computer Skills

  • Prior experience with Microsoft Windows and Office applications, basic internet searching and social media experience is required
  • Ability to learn library technology is required

License/Credentials

  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver's License is required
