Youth Pastor—Mission Centric Job Description
Status: Full or part time pastoral staff.
Why this position is needed: Journey Christian Church seeks to be a vibrant, growing mature family with special and intentional focus on creating and maintaining strong, healthy families. A Youth Pastor will help in this counter cultural mission in several specific ways:
- Leadership. Develop adult and youth leaders who are capable of reaching unchurched youth and teaching those in the church to love God and each other.
- Mission support.Participate in and develop ways of creating a family atmosphere where attendees of all ages and status continue to take steps in their own journey toward Christlikeness.
- Student ministry.Teach, counsel and guide students in their walk with Christ through personal interaction, small and large group activity, events and retreats.
- Parent support. Develop and maintain effective methods of helping both traditional and single, blended, or foster families in raising children to adulthood.
- Authentic Christianity.Serve as a role model to students of taking personal steps in Christlikeness and growing together with the larger church family.
Principal functions:
- Create goals and strategies for youth ministry
- Recruit and train youth leaders
- Develop and maintain systems of effective outreach and discipleship
- Create an annual budget and monitor expenses appropriately
- Provide pastoral care for students and families
Day-to-day expectations:
- Be a self-starter, planning and completing tasks with a high degree of independence.
- Work as a team player on staff, participating as possible with the goals of the church and the activities of other staff members.
- Extend pastoral care to church attenders as possible
- Attend and be an active participant in all weekend services except when excused
- Participate in Fellowship of Christian Assemblies meetings and activities.
- Act with humility as a servant of Christ and of His church.
Reports to: Supervising pastor.
Position review: Members of the pastoral staff meet annually for a review with their supervisor and an elder in order to measure goals met and determine future goals for youth ministry.
Qualifications:
The Youth Pastor should be:
1. Motivated by a heart of passion for God.
2. Inspired and personally blessed through worship and study of Scripture.
3. Able to work well with people, encouraging them and building their confidence so they may more faithfully and effectively serve on a ministry team.
4. Teachable, able to accept direction from the Lead Pastor and supervisor and work well with other church ministry department leaders.
5. Able to think creatively, generating ideas to edify the ministry team and uplift the entire congregation.
6. Able to plan and organize youth ministry events.
7. Able to recruit, motivate, and train people in developing their ministry skills.
8. Able to relate appropriately to churched and unchurched youth.
Primary responsibilities: (in general order of priority)
1. Lead and/or coordinate the regular weekly youth services and LifeGroups with relevant Bible based messages and worship.
2. Recruit, screen and train effective youth leaders.
3. Lead and/or coordinate youth activities and special events.
4. Lead and/or coordinate occasional outreach events and mission trips.
5. Assist families by providing counsel, prayer and skill building in raising children.
6. Connect with students outside of church activities.
7. Evaluate and provide effective age appropriate curriculum for Biblical instruction.
8. Maintain accurate and timely financial accountability for youth activities.
9. Work with the Children’s Ministry director to encourage seamless and strategic continuation of family ministry.
Other responsibilities may include:
1. Lead and/or coordinate 5thand 6thgrade ministry or lead a college age LifeGroup.
2. Speak in scheduled weekend services.
3. Participate in general church ministry such as visitation, funerals, weddings, etc. as assigned.
4. Accomplish various other tasks as assigned.
