Job description

Montana PBS is a partnership of Montana State University-Bozeman (KUSM) and the University of Montana-Missoula (KUFM). Montana PBS is the state’s public television service based on the Montana State University campus and housed in the Visual Communications Building. The station produces, and broadcasts, high quality local and national PBS programming for Montana citizens. Montana PBS also creates digital content for PK-12 classrooms published on the FREE website PBS LearningMedia www.pbslearningmedia.org.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design and implement programs to support Montana high school students and teachers to create original content to share on Montana PBS platforms using PBS developed programs such as the PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs and KQED Youth Media Challenges.
  • Convene and lead a youth advisory board composed of a diverse group of youth ages 13-18 from Montana with the intent to build and maintain strong relationships with Montana youth and plan future initiatives.
  • Collaborate with the Montana Digital Academy to develop and teach a course devoted to journalism and Youth Media production.
  • Collaborate with production and digital engagement staff at MSU and UM to publish youth produced content on Montana PBS broadcast and digital platforms in partnership with Montana PBS Reports: Impact and other Montana PBS programs as needed.
  • Identify partners across the state who currently support Youth Media making and journalism. Build and cultivate relationships with these like-minded peers and explore opportunities for collaboration.
  • Lead and Co-lead professional development workshops for teachers who want to learn about media literacy and media production in the secondary classroom.
  • Promote PBS LearningMedia to teachers across the state by attending and presenting at conferences and other events for teachers.
  • Build and maintain a database of teachers who teach media production in high schools across the state and engage with them regularly using digital newsletters, social media and face to face meetings when appropriate.
  • Support the work of the Education department as needed by attending and participating in events online and in person.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Degree in Education and a current Montana teaching certificate for grades 6-12.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching journalism, media making or digital storytelling in a middle or high school setting.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the pedagogy of teaching and learning for middle and high school aged students.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience producing content for broadcast and/or digital platforms.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating professional development for classroom teachers in both formal and informal settings.

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Formal or informal training in media production.
  • Recognized achievement in the field of education and/or production.
  • Demonstrated experience designing digital learning materials for teachers and students.
  • Familiarity with PBS Newshour Student Reporting Labs program and curriculum.
  • Familiarity with PBS Media Literacy Certification for Educators.
  • Familiarity and/or experience teaching with PBS LearningMedia content site for teachers and students.

The Successful Candidate Will
  • Expertise presenting for groups of adults and students of all sizes online and in person.
  • Expertise using technology to communicate and collaborate.
  • Experience using a variety of production equipment and programs such as DSLR cameras, lighting kits, audio equipment and editing software such as Adobe Premiere
  • Experience evaluating programs and setting measurable goals based on data collected.
  • Knowledge and understanding of teaching practices related to media production, journalism, and media literacy.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently and collaboratively as needed

There will be in and out of state travel required for this position. The amount of travel will vary, and transportation and accommodations will be provided by Montana PBS for all outreach events and activities.
The Youth Media Specialist will need to be available to work on a flexible schedule with willingness and availability to work in the evenings and weekends.
Most of the work conducted by the Youth Media Specialist will take place at various locations across the state, however, this is not a remote position. The Youth Media Specialist will need to live close enough to Bozeman that they can be present in the office on the MSU campus when they are not working in the community.
