Job description

Under general supervision, the Juvenile Detention Shift Supervisor oversees and provides counseling and a variety of programs to improve behaviors and achieve their individual goals of the residents housed at the Scott County Juvenile Detention Center.Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Employees are required to be in attendance and prepared to begin work at their assigned work location on the specified days and hours. Factors such as regular attendance at the job are not routinely listed in job descriptions, but are an essential function. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervises full and part-time staff; participates in hiring, training, conducting performance appraisal, and administering corrective and disciplinary actions as necessary; may adjust staff schedule to meet appropriate staff and client needs; approves leave as necessary within limits or authority; acts on behalf of the Director in his/her absence.
Serves as back-up in processing invoices, purchasing card reconciliations, submitting claims, payroll, and other related administrative tasks; maintains current knowledge of the detention center's key issues and any policy or program changes; maintains 24 hour on-call availability.
Follows appropriate procedures related to the intake and release of residents in accordance with department and regulatory guidelines; obtains all necessary court-related documentation; conducts thorough search for illegal or contraband materials; obtains demographic, mental, and physical health information from resident to identify appropriate housing and watch status; reviews center information with residents and family members.
Utilizes behavior modification processes to enforce the rules and regulations of the detention center, provide structure for residents, and manage individual and group behavior; applies escalation of consequences or privileges to reinforce behavior; documents daily and incidental behavior, routine activities, and group interaction in general and individual resident logs; uses department database software to manage to documentation of residents' activities.
Inventories clothing, food, and other supplies and documents utilization; manages the food inventory for the Department of Education and follows the Government guidelines for Nutritional foods and value of our residents; orders food and supplies as needed.
Conducts periodic security checks of facility, control area, equipment, and rooms to ensure the premises are secure, residents are safe from hazards to themselves or others, identify contraband or breach of the premises.
Dispenses mediation in accordance with Center guidelines. Conducts inventory of medications on premises at the beginning of each shift. Contacts medical resources with questions. Documents receipt, dispensing, destruction, refusal and any other information pertinent to resident mediation.
Coordinates and conducts full-contact visitation for residents; obtains visitor approval from Juvenile Court Services and confirms identity of resident visitors; reviews approved list of visitors before granting visitation; conducts searches of residents and visitors before and after each visit.
Completes appropriate and accurate documentation of juvenile care, admissions, and releases; assists in compiling periodic program, residency, and operations reports; assists with completing annual Sate reporting requirements.
Provides input to the Director regarding budget issues, expenditures, and enhancements.
Oversees activities of work shifts to ensure shift duties are completed and residents' immediate needs are being met; ensures each shift is appropriately staffed.
Coordinates and directs the activities of student interns. Communicates with outside agencies: Juvenile Court Services, County Attorney offices, Police Departments, Sheriff's Department, other placements facilities and detention centers.
Oversees the In-Home Detention Program (IHD)/Enhanced In Home Detention Program (EIHD); supervises staff in a community-based setting; provides updates on client's progress and adherence to rules and expectations; completes weekly progress reports; conducts visits with clients and families; develops and implements program policies and procedures; verifies all documentation is completed accurately and on time.
Demonstrates the ability to exemplify, by his/her actions, the County PRIDE philosophy.
Performs related duties as assigned.Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Criminal Justice or related field; AND three (3) years of experience in criminal justice or psychology which includes some previous supervisory responsibilities; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge of:
Applicable local, State, and Federal laws, codes, regulations, and ordinances.
Work safety policies, procedures, and practices.
De-escalation techniques.
Supervisory principles and practices.
Behavior management methods and practices.
Skill in:
Conducing mental health evaluations.
Maintaining accurate records.
Preparing clear and concise reports.
Operating a computer to include standard software and some specialized software.
Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.License and Certification Requirements
