C & C is more than daily tracking. It is a comprehensive mentorship that requires experience and training. The mentor is a part-time certified position. Each mentor will have a caseload of 20-30 students.
Because at-risk students move a lot, the mentor needs stability, education, and initiative. The C&C mentor will work with a student for at least two years when possible.
The mentor's job is to liaise between the school and the student with caseworkers, group home leaders, trackers, parents, and guardians. Mentors connect the students to services that will provide them with all the resources available for their success in school.
Rationale: TCSD Youth in Care provides a Check & Connect mentor for each student who is in the custody of the State of Utah. Check & Connect is a comprehensive intervention designed to enhance student engagement at school and learning for marginalized, disengaged students through relationship building, problem-solving, and capacity building.
Responsibilities include:
• Track student grades and attendance and report to parents, guardians, and caseworkers.
• Report any behavior or other issues to the care providers and caseworker.
• Work with the care providers to meet student academic needs at home.
• Connect the student to resources at school, including tutors, counselors, Special Education resources, etc.
• Weekly visits with each student to track their needs. Visits can be more frequent as needed.
• Connect the students with extracurricular activities to connect them to the school. Attend those activities if possible.
• Attend IEP meetings, Child and Family Team meetings, and occasionally court hearings as requested.
• Advocate for the student with teachers.
• Build relationships with each student.
• Coach educational and executive functioning skills to help their education and throughout their lives.
• Help the student set, measure, and attain educational goals.
• Connect with administrators, school staff, teachers, and others to advocate for our students.
The mentor will attend the following trainings: Check & Connect Training and Utah Gang Conference Attendance.
Qualifications:
Certified teacher or social worker,
Minimum education of a bachelor's degree or higher.
Experience working with youth, particularly at-risk students.
Must be a self-starter, able to set a schedule and stick to it.
Able to keep a high level of confidentiality.
Must have an affinity for at-risk youth and the ability to carry an unconditional positive regard for that individual.
Must be able to hold at-risk youth accountable for their actions and choices gently.
Maintains a non-judgmental effect and doesn't react to student manipulation or non-compliance.
Knows how to negotiate with a non-compliant student.
Strong organizational skills.
Comfortable with technology including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Forms. Must have solid electronic file management skills and be able to save, find, and share various files on Google Drive and Microsoft Teams.
Strong communication skills include email management (clearing the inbox frequently), not letting tasks fall through the cracks, initiating contacts, and following up on communications.
The candidate knows how to make conversations safe and frames the boundaries of communication with "What I don't want" and "What I do want."
Working Conditions: Will be working with the Student Services and then assigned to the schools that need the mentor.
