Reports to: Engagement Specialist at Kalaupapa National Historical Park
YES (Youth Empowerment Stewards) Program:
Are you passionate about disability rights and accessibility in National Parks and public lands? Do you identify as having a disability yourself? Work with us and help increase access to the outdoors for everyone. Our health, our planet, and our collective future rely on diversity – in thought, ability, experience, and ideas. That’s why we need YOU. Become a Youth Empowerment Steward (YES) intern and help make the outdoors more accessible for all!
Kalaupapa National Historical Park Community Engagement Intern:
Stewards Individual Placements provides individuals with AmeriCorps service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. YES interns focus on barriers to entry for individuals with disabilities in the outdoor workplace. Stewards, in partnership with Kalaupapa National Historical Park, are seeking a YES intern who will play a critical role in helping Kalaupapa National Historical Park better serve our local communities by improving accessibility for patrons and staff.
Kalaupapa's purpose is to share the stories of the over 8000 people who were forcibly isolated to this location due to Hansen's disease. Although many of the patient-residents had/have disabilities, access to and infrastructure within the community have a variety of barriers for access. The park's Accessibility SETP (self-evaluation and transition plan) is in its final draft. The YES member will develop web content to describe the visitor experience in a way to help potential visitors choose what is best for them. The intern will research local advocacy organizations and help the park develop relationships for future partnerships that support visitor access.
The YES Intern will be tasked with enhancing web content for visitor-experience decision-making. Kalaupapa has several physical constraints that can’t be changed due to geography and travel means; the YES Member will develop content for web pages that articulate in writing and imagery what a visitor experience can be like so that potential visitors to this site can personalize how they choose to visit, where to visit and how. If time allows work with at least one advocacy group to vet material and receive feedback.
Duties Include:
Enhance web content for visitor experience decision making
Research, conduct outreach, and generate a list of local advocacy groups and contact information
Present findings and research to Park Staff
If time allows development of one project description to enhance accessibility on-site based on draft Accessibility Self Evaluation and Transition Plan (SETP). Report out to park Management Team
