Job Description

Job Title:Youth Development Worker

Department: Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Supervisor: School-based Program Manager

Location: Northwestern High Schoolor Hyattsville, MD. This is an on-site position.

Classification:Exempt/ Salaried

Synopsis:The youth Development worker (YDW) will develop and maintain relationships with youth, families, and partner site staff including teachers, and school administrators. The YDW plays a pivotal role in shaping the lives of Latino youth assisting them as they develop appropriate coping skills for their adjustment to the school environment. The YDW maintains healthy & appropriate relationships with youth and their families.

Qualifications:Required Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree in the human services field and/or bachelor’s degree in the human services field preferred
  • Two years of experience working with youth and immigrant families

Required Skills/Abilities/Certifications/Licenses:

  • Fluent bilingual Spanish & English
  • Experience providing individual and group interventions
  • Knowledge of Latino immigrant community and ability to work with all segments of the community
  • Detail oriented, self-starter, highly organized
  • Strong positive aptitude to work independently as part of a team
  • Ability to work virtually and in person in-and-outside of a school setting
  • Ability to telework
  • Interpersonal and problem-solving skills, detail oriented, self-started.
  • Capability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of positive Youth Development
  • Ability to build and maintain network systems within a school setting
  • Comfortable working with youth and their families
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, proficient in Excel, database management, data entry, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Program and community outreach and engagement
  • Conducts program enrollment intake and initial assessment interviews with new or readmitted clients
  • Be responsible for the implementation of each Youth’s Individual Treatment Plan
  • Provide in-person, email, or via telephone services
  • Acts as a client advocate in school, community, and government agencies
  • Provide intensive case management services to youth and their families/guardians
  • Engage with youth in daily academic and pro-social routines and activities
  • Develop and support creative interventions for the youth and their families
  • Provide guidance and role modeling for the youth in the milieu
  • Facilitate large and small psychoeducational groups (individually or with co-facilitator)
  • Collaborate with school administration and staff on needs of students, families and school community
  • Strong sense of collaboration within colleagues and community partners
  • Responsible to organize parents and community activities
  • Integrate into and engage with school culture through development of positive relationships with school community
  • Be responsible for the implementation of each Youth’s Individual Treatment Plan, and document interactions with clients in a maximum of 48 hours
  • Support students and families in crisis
  • Collaborates with the training of new Youth Development Workers and Social Work interns.
  • Participate in supervision meetings
  • Attend in school and community meetings
  • Attends monthly staff meetings and all mandatory LCDP activities
  • Availability to work during evenings and weekends when is needed
  • Participates in and supports on-going planning & continuous quality improvement sessions
  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
