We are seeking a Youth Development & Media Specialist to help us provide experiential learning programs on media and technology. If you are naturally curious and enjoy helping children and teens explore new ideas, join our team and you could make a significant difference in the lives of youth.

About the Organization: Media Power Youth is a Youth Development nonprofit that helps young people advocate for the causes and people they care about by building healthy communication skills. We inspire young people to engage with media in thoughtful and creative ways that support their physical and mental well-being. We facilitate a wide variety of programs and provide resources for parents, educators, and emerging youth leaders.

Position Summary:

The Youth Development & Media Specialist will develop and facilitate learning opportunities for youth in grades K through 12. They will host small group activities and media creation projects that teach youth how to use media safely and creatively. They will collaborate with the Executive Director and community partners. They will develop resources for youth-serving professionals and parents seeking to help young people develop a healthy relationship with technology. This work includes opportunities to engage in discussions and advocacy projects on social issues that young people care about including mental health, substance use, body image, healthy relationships, identity, and protecting the environment. You will help others build their media literacy skills and grow our next generation of leaders!

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate fun and creative enrichment activities with youth at community organizations, including schools, after-school programs, museums, and summer camps.
  • Build relationships with youth-serving professionals, educators, and community leaders to expand access to media education programs where youth learn and play.
  • Design educational materials, digital content, and social media posts to help foster dynamic, community conversations about media and well-being.
  • Support youth leadership clubs through mentoring, advocacy trainings, and assistance with video creation projects.
  • Write facilitation guides for film/media discussions and program activities.
  • Research how youth are using different media platforms and recommend digital wellness strategies to keep children safe and healthy.
  • Develop and deliver professional development trainings to youth-serving professionals and parents to expand their knowledge of youth media culture and how to use media to enhance learning.
  • Mentor summer camp educators and volunteers in program activities.
  • Assist with grant writing and capacity building projects by providing insights on program impact and suggesting new offerings.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Passion for Youth Development and engaging others in learning new things, especially as it relates to media, technology, and well-being.
  • Energetic, flexible, and resourceful. Facilitating project-based learning, such as making videos, is a dynamic and collaborative process. Embracing spontaneity and encouraging curiosity makes our learning experiences fun for both participants and our staff.
  • Ability to collaborate with people of diverse backgrounds, ages, and abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills including persuasive writing and speaking, active listening, and empathizing with others.
  • Prior experience in writing lesson plans and/or facilitating youth activities preferred.
  • Graphic design and video production skills (or a desire to learn).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite.
  • Flexibility to work late afternoons/evenings (mostly midweek) to lead and participate in after-school programs and events with community partners.
  • Completed or currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program (or equivalent experience) in a related field including education, arts, media/communications, social work, psychology, sports and recreation, library science, nonprofit management, or marketing.
