The Flatbush YMCA is seeking a Youth Coach who will be responsible for leading a group or team of children/teens in a designated sport and progressive skill development in a designated sport for the Teen Center: Saturday Night Lights Teen program. The Youth Coach will promote the enjoyment of sport while improving physical competence, developing confidence, teaching healthy competition and skill development.
Teen Center: Saturday Night Lights Teen program operate Saturdays evenings.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the health, safety and well-being of participants in the program, by providing close supervision of all activities, and ensuring spaces are clean and supplies are well maintained.
- Promote an inclusive, welcoming, and respectful environment that embraces the diversity of all participants.
- Work with the Supervisor to develop program objectives, goals and logistics.
- Schedule team practices and games during Saturday Night Lights Teen Center hours in collaboration with teen advisor.
- Create written plans for all practices that are age-appropriate and progressive.
- Provide supervision of the players to ensure safety and engagement.
- Modify and adapt coaching style to meet the needs of the participants.
- Teach rules, fundamentals and enhance basic skills. Emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship over winning and the outcome of the game.
- Encourage a lifetime of participation in sports and physical activity.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding schedules, registration, and the progress of their child/teen.
- Communicate to parents/guardians about additional YMCA opportunities that can benefit them and/or their child/teen.
- Ensure that all equipment is age-appropriate, safe and in proper working condition. This includes conducting scheduled equipment safety checks.
- Work with the Supervisor to develop and lead program promotion and recruitment efforts.
- Provide direction to volunteers or Teen Advisors who are supporting the program, when applicable.
- Inform supervisor on-duty regarding any incident reports that need to be filled out.
- Keep a safe and clean activity space.
- Adhere to all Saturday Night Lights funding expectations and requirements.
- Must obtain YMCA Coaching 101 Training within 90 days of start date.
- Must obtain CDC HEADS UP Concussion in Youth Sports certificate within 30 days of start date.
- Must obtain Child Abuse Prevention within 30 days of start date.
- Actively participate in training sessions, designated meetings, and special events, as appropriate.
- Other activities and duties as needed that address the ongoing health and well-being of our staff and members.
- Follow and maintain sanitary habits in accordance with CDC guidelines.
Desired Skills & Experience:
- High School diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of experience coaching children/teens sport in a structured setting.
- Content expert in designated sport(s).
- Coaching license in the respective sport preferred.
- In-depth knowledge of sporting strategies.
- Current First Aid / CPR certification.
- Knowledge of youth development stages.
- Ability to communicate effectively with members of all ages.
- Good Communication and Interpersonal skills.
- Must be available to work Saturday evenings from, 5:00 PM - 9:00 PM.
