Job description

Youth Apprenticeship program for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Facilities Maintenance division.

Position

Welder

Skills Necessary

Youth Apprentice applicants should have skills in the following forms in order to succeed within this program

Possess physical strength (ability to lift 50lbs.) and good eye-hand coordination

Familiarity with common hand tools

Ability to use depth perception to walk and drive in a straight line

Skills to be Learned

The following are the skills and abilities that apprentices will have the opportunity to learn from hands on experience

Ability to read and interpret blueprints and work specifications

Ability to set up and operate hand and power tools particular to the welding trade

Ability to set up ladders and scaffolding

Learn to mix protective coating and apply it to welding parts

Learn to apply fire suppression measures in case of emergencies

How to properly prepare surfaces for welding

Program

Youth Apprenticeship-Welding

Length of Program

The length of the program will vary from 12-24 months depending on current grade at start of program, licensing, and certificate opportunities.

Number of Positions

Within the first term of the Youth Apprenticeship, there will be 1 available position.

Permanent Position

Youth Apprentices will have the opportunity to apply for a Welding Apprentice position upon successful completion of Youth Apprenticeship program and graduation from a participating high school in the airport footprint.

Application Process

Applicants for the Welding Youth Apprenticeship program must be enrolled as a junior or senior at one of the participating high schools. Applicant must also obtain recommendations from the teacher of the qualifying CTAE program as well as character reference from non-school personnel. Apply online at www.atlantaga.gov

Compensation for Program

Salary for this position is $17 per hour.

Schedule

Work based Learning students will work a maximum of 20 hours per week

The 20 hour per week schedule will fall between 7am and 7pm, Monday-Friday.

*Hours may increase during the summer months to a 40-hour workweek.
