Job Summary: For more than 150 years, MICA has provided Baltimore’s young people (from kindergarten through grade 8) with a full array of classes tailored to their developmental needs and designed to inspire creativity through high-quality instructional experiences in the visual arts taught by instructors from around Maryland. High School Studios courses (grades 9 through 12) build on skills already demonstrated by older teens who want to broaden and advance their artistic talents.
Summary of Essential Functions
Assist the Site Coordinator, Program manager and Faculty in providing high-quality instructional and social experiences in visual arts and design courses. The YPS HSS Substitute Assistant will provide program support in the classroom in the absence of the regular classroom teacher.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Remain on-site for the duration of the program when the program is in session: June 17- July 26, 2024
  • Participate in Training June 10- June 14, 2024
  • Assist in the delivery of art and design content to youth through classroom and care instruction in place of an absent Faculty member
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of materials and records
  • Greet students and families warmly, assisting with any questions or concerns
  • Exercise classroom management, interventions, and support as needed
  • Help prepare end of session virtual art shows and presentations
  • Help facilitate pick-up and drop-off procedures for students and families
  • Plan and lead community building activities and art making activities during care time
  • Maintain and Manage Art Supply Closet and accurate records of student attendance, progress, and behavior.
  • Delivering art lessons based on the provided curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Providing instruction in various artistic techniques, mediums, and styles.
  • Demonstrating and explaining artistic concepts and processes to students.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of various art or design content areas
  • Skills with various materials and tools
  • Ability to be flexible, patient and adapt to changing program needs
  • Familiarity with educational technology and resources for teaching art, such as digital design software and online resources
Minimum qualifications:
  • Current MICA MAT student, degree completion not required
  • Internship or other educational teaching experience in the K-12 setting, or equivalent

  • Work environment: While performing the duties of the job, the employee is exposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Required training: Handbook orientation, Anti-Harassment, Hazard Communication, Emergency Plans & Fire Prevention, Personal Protection Equipment. (additional training may be added, SEE: EHS Manager training schedule)
