Prepares switch lists for train crews and operates keyboard or other data entry deviceto enter data into computer by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities- Types or writes switch lists to inform switching crew of railroad yard, location, disposition, and number of railroad cars to be switched for loading, unloading, makeup, and breakup of trains.
- Keeps record of and reports movement and disposition of railroad cars.
- Counts and records number of cars remaining in yard each day.
- Enters alphabetic, numeric, or symbolic data from source documents into computer following format displayed on screen.
- Compares data entered with source documents, or reenters data in verification format on screen to detect errors.
- Deletes incorrectly entered data and reenters correct data.
- Compiles, sorts, and verifies accuracy of data to be entered.
- Telephones various personnel to verify arrival or location of railroad cars.
- Answers telephone and gives information to callers or routes call to appropriate official and places outgoing calls.

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months' related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
