Form of workUSC seeks to fill a position of Staff Scientist focused on X-ray characterization tools to perform collaborative research and training in a shared instrumentation facility comprised of X-ray characterization methods such as photo-electron spectroscopy, diffraction, scattering and fluorescence spectroscopy, and associated sample preparation equipment. A senior scientist appointment may be considered in candidates with significant experience and/or expertise. The facility serves users from physical and life sciences and engineering. Qualifications
PhD or MS in science or engineering field with extensive, and cutting-edge experience in techniques such as XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray Diffraction), SAXS (Small Angle X-ray Scattering), WAXS (Wide Angle X-ray Scattering) and XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy). Strong experience spanning sample preparation (both hard and soft materials) to advanced techniques in using X-rays to probe the structure and composition of materials at varied length scales. Strong communication skills At least two years' experience beyond the PhD or MS with over five years of experience.
Duties
Assist/train users in advanced X-ray techniques and experiments Collaborate with USC user groups to apply advanced X-ray methods to address research problems on supported research projects. Organize/coordinate semi-annual symposia/workshops on advanced X-ray techniques of spectroscopy, diffraction, and scattering, as well as sample preparation techniques. Organize and perform demonstrations/tutorials for users seeking to apply advanced X-ray techniques. Develop protocols for performing advanced X-ray techniques, including training procedures and licensed user tests. Support/lead preparation of proposals for new instrumentation for nano-characterization, ancillary equipment, and specimen instruments for the facility. Support research proposals that require the use of the Facility. Stay abreast of new developments in instrumentation, techniques, and methods, and inform users through seminars and/or workshops. Oversee instrument operations and work with research assistants - develop practices and protocols to ensure that instruments and accessories function properly, capabilities are utilized correctly, and training is performed properly and efficiently.

Additional Information
This is an onsite position at USC's University Park Campus located in Los Angeles, California. This position is not eligible for remote work.
The annual base salary range for this position is $98,836.15 - $119,497.99. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope of responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
Minimum Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate
Minimum Experience: 5 years
Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education and experience in research specialization with highly advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures, analysis methods, principles, theories and concepts. Demonstrated leadership in developing new ideas and ability to publish in appropriate academic and practitioner outlets. Demonstrated independent thinking and leadership in scholarly writing according to such criteria as: first authored publications, conceptual leadership in the development of publications generated alone or with others, writing of first drafts of publications and/or single authored publications.
