Position Summary: Do you want to empower individuals to become confident and effective writers? Do you want to be part of student retention and success? If so, we have an exciting opportunity as a Writing Specialist and Computer Skills Tutor. This is a 30 hour per week, term staff position. Working hours are negotiable to include one evening till 7:00pm per week.

As a Writing Specialist, you will provide students and community members with the tools needed to succeed in their academic, occupational, and creative writing endeavors. Your role will involve helping them improve their reading comprehension, understand the writing process, and succeed in various writing assignments. Whether it's MLA, APA, or Chicago formatting, research, or writing within their specific discipline, you'll be there to guide them. From brainstorming to revising and editing, you'll support individuals at every stage of the writing process. Additionally, you'll collaborate with our Learning Center to develop and deliver workshops/classes on writing and grammar topics to enhance students' skills and readiness for college. As the Writing Specialist, you will have opportunities for professional development that enhance your role.
As a Computer Skills Tutor, you will assist students one-on-one with, but not limited to, navigating Blackboard, locating assignments, attaching and submitting homework, and understanding how to create third party accounts within blackboard. Patience and clear communication is essential to ensure student understanding and success.

To thrive in this role, you must possess strong interpersonal skills that result in excellent rapport with students, faculty and community members. Clear and concise communication is essential as you will work with a diverse background of students and community members. You must have a passion for teaching and supporting students of all skill levels. Flexibility of instruction and tutoring are essential and you will need to know how to use various modalities (in-person, Zoom, Teams, and email).

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in writing or a related field or equivalent experience.
Experience explaining concepts to students of varying skill levels.

Position Details:

This position is located on the Kenai Peninsula College campus in Soldotna. This is a part-time, 30-hour per week, non-exempt, term staff position complete with both a competitive salary and full employee benefits package. UA provides a generous compensation package that includes retirement options, annual leave, 12 paid holidays per year, tuition waivers for employees and family members, and affordable medical, dental and vision care coverage. New hires will be placed on the UA staff salary schedule, Grade 77, starting at $22.64 based on education and experience.
