Summary of Major Function

Nursing support staff are responsible for the delivery of care to the patient under the direction of the professional nurse. Nursing support staff function within the Nurse Practice Act of the State of New Mexico, as well as the policies and procedures of Cibola General Hospital.

Qualifications

? Requires combination of education and experience with knowledge, skills and abilities essential to the performance of duties assigned.

? Must possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to deal tactfully with staff, physicians, patients and their families.

? Must be willing to assist staff with various tasks as assigned, including floating to other areas of the hospital.

? Must have knowledge and abilities to take care of patients of different age categories.

Position Specific Qualifications

Nurse’s Aide

? Requires current BLS certification

? Must have good organizational and communication skills

? Basic computer skills are required

? Cross train to unit secretary position

? Able (or willing to learn how) to care for patients of varying ages ranging from the newborn population up to geriatric patients

Unit Secretary

? Greeting and assisting patients and visitors.

? Answering phones and transferring calls to the appropriate places. Assisting with physician and staff contact.

? Assisting with answering call lights.

? Assembling patient charts for inpatient and outpatient services.

? Order entry.

? Taking patient charts apart when patients are discharged.

? Assisting in obtaining past medical records from other facilities.

? Assisting with transfers of patients to other facilities.

? Assisting in maintaining facility call schedule.

? Maintaining and uploading information on assignment sheet and plan of care sheet. Monitor Technician

? Requires current CPR card.

? Successful completion of Basic Rhythm Recognition course with a competency exam score of 84% or greater.

? Annual successful completion of Rhythm Recognition Competencies as outlined above.

? Must be proficient in job duties, including, but not limited to, observation of continuous cardiac monitoring of patients (with or without SPO2 monitoring) and desk duties. When relieved of continuous cardiac monitoring the MT may perform other duties that involve direct, or indirect, patient care as deemed necessary.

Emergency Room Technician

? Requires current CPR card

? AEMT license preferred

? Monitor technician class must be completed within one year of employment with a competency exam score of 84% or greater. Rhythm Recognition Competency must be successfully completed annually.

Operating Room Technician

? Surgical Technician Certification desired

? Current BLS certification with willingness to obtain NRP within 18 months of hire.

? Must be able to assume on-call duties with an outside time frame of 15 minutes to arrive at the hospital.

? Demonstrate the ability to withstand the increased level of stress imposed by the operating room environment.

? Formal program of education for sterile processing is desired. The employee shall possess current knowledge of best practice and technique for sterile processing.

? Demonstrate an attitude of surgical conscience with a foundation of quality, safe patient care.

OB Nurse’s Aide

? Requires current BLS certification

? Must have good organizational and communication skills

?Basic computer skills are required.

? Cross train to unit secretary and Nurses Aide position.

? Understanding and ability to perform sterile technique with setting delivery table up.

? Proper care and cleaning of delivery instruments.

? Ability to perform newborn hearing screen, CCHD screening and transcutaneous bili with training.

? Ability to perform and learn newborn care.

? Able to perform and learn maternal, postpartum care.

? Assisting with placement of fetal monitor.

? Assisting with collection of PKU after completion of competency

? Assisting with checklist completion, stocking, temperature and medication box log.

Wound Care Technician

? Requires current CPR card

? Must have good organizational and communication skills

? Basic computer skills are required

? Understanding and ability to perform sterile technique.

? Proper care of and cleansing of instruments.

? PAR level and supply maintenance.

? Assisting Providers in performing Wound Care treatments, cleansing wounds, applying dressings to name a few

? Obtaining of medical records internally and externally.

? Setting up referrals as needed.

? Assist with care of patients of varying ages.

? Must know (or willing to learn)” Wound care principles/Wound Healing Concepts”

? On the job training

? Other duties as assigned

Psychological Considerations

? Able to work under stressful situations and respond to emergencies competently.

? Able to work as part of a team.

? Must be flexible, have problem-solving skills, prioritize, and demonstrate healthy coping mechanism.

? Standing: to check vital signs

? Walking: to walk patients, make rounds, respond to emergencies, answer phones and alarms, gather equipment and move about unit.

? Squatting and kneeling: to plug in equipment, provide CPR, assess and empty drainage bags, assist patients from floor and transfer patients from chairs to beds.

? Pushing/pulling: to move patients in wheelchairs, crash carts, room furniture, gurneys, repositions patients, bedscales, apply pressure to vascular sites and open drawers.

? Lifting: to transfer adult patients (approximately 80 pounds), move equipment into rooms (approximately 20 pounds).

? Manual/finger dexterity:

? Vision: to read fine print, lables, documentation: to review telementry, digital monitor; to read chemical reactions and test results.

? Reaching: overhead reach to open cabinets, insert/obtain wall suction, obtain supplies from top shelf.

? Hearing: to auscultate (BP, HT sounds, lung sounds, bowel sounds); to answer alarms, phones, distress signals and overhead pages.

? Sitting: to chart, counsel, give patient teaching.

? Speaking: to communicate with others in English.

Environmental Considerations

? Potential contamination/exposure to blood borne pathogens, body substances, biohazardous materials and infectious diseases.

? Able to work in a temperature-controlled hospital environment.

? Occasional exposure to a variety of auditory and olfactory stimuli.
