Job Summary: The Workers Compensation Specialist will coordinate the day-to-day activities of Sims Crane’s Compensation program. This role will report to the Director of Human Resources and Compliance.


Essential Functions:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day activities of Sim Crane’s Compensation Program. Responsible for filing time-sensitive forms to our Third-Party Administrator (TPA) and to the Payroll department to ensure appropriate compensation to injured employees.
  • Assist injured employees in the Worker’s Compensation claim process. Guide employees on each step of the process. Provide information to injured employees and keep them informed as appropriate to ensure the employee understands their entitlements and rights. Work with supervisors, Safety, Compliance, Human Resources and Payroll to get employees back to work promptly and safely.
  • Establish, maintain, and audit records/files. Utilize Human Resources Information System (HRIS) to verify employment, salaries, and employee information for filing workers' compensation claims. Review work status reports, administer pay adjustments, coordinate Family Medical Leave (FML) with Senior HR Generalist, investigate and process claims. Work with TPA to manage large loss time claims. Arrange for modified duty and functional capacity evaluations (FCEs) for injured workers.
  • Serve as liaison between the injured employee and the TPA, other divisions, departments, and outside agencies. Negotiate and resolve sensitive and controversial issues in consultation with the Director of Human Resources and Compliance. Maintain and exchange information with internal and external departments or agencies to explain policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and guidelines concerning workers' compensation. Ensure organizational compliance to all federal, state, and local laws for Sims Crane Workers' Compensation Program.
  • Work with Sims Crane TPA to plan quarterly and periodic claim reports, claim review meetings, and coordinate facilities. Review check registers for accuracy and point out discrepancies to TPA. Coordinate Temporary Income Benefits (TIB) with TPA to ensure employee receives appropriate compensation from the College as well as the TPA.
  • Work closely with the Sims Crane Risk Management and Safety team on investigating work-related accidents or illnesses and addressing potential workers' compensation claims where safety issues are prevalent. Serve as backup to the Safety team to address claims and interact with the TPA. Work with the Safety team to investigate injury sites and address potential unsafe matters.
  • Develop, present, and promote training that informs employees and reduces costs associated with workplace injuries. Attend and participate in professional and group meetings, stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of workers' compensation administration.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to interpret and implement federal, state and local health and safety regulations
  • Knowledge of Florida Bureau of Compliance, Division of Workers’ Compensation rules and regulations
  • Working knowledge of Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPPA), Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO), and Return-to-Work programs
  • Working knowledge of investigative techniques and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for Workers’ Compensation claims
  • Effective communication (oral and written) skills
  • Ability to work with confidential materials
  • Effective time management, organizational and interpersonal skills


Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Business or a related field, from an accredited college or university OR AA/AS degree with 1 year of experience in Worker’s Compensation or related field OR 3 years of experience in Worker’s Compensation or a related field
  • 3-5 years of experience in Worker’s Compensation role
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
