JOB DESCRIPTION


CLASSIFICATION: CERTIFIED

JOB TITLE: SECONDARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR

REPORTS TO: SCHOOL ADMINISTRATOR

CALENDAR: TEACHER CALENDAR

RANGE: TEACHER SALARY RANGE


Job Goal

To promote student success, provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school-based counseling program that addresses academic, career and personal/social development of students.

Provide comprehensive, data driven, developmental supports within the academic, personal/social, and career domains that deliver services equitably to all students. Counselors provide direct student services through school school counseling core curriculum, individual student planning, and responsive services. They also provide indirect student services on behalf of the student such as referral for additional assistance, consultation, and collaboration with parents, teachers, and other professional and community organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Education related field
  • AZ Counselor Certificate
  • AZ IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Three years exemplary teaching experience, preferred
  • Demonstrated leadership skill

Core Job Functions

  • Initiate and coordinate school-wide counseling services and activities
  • Maintain and create a safe, equitable, and inclusive space for all students in office/counseling center
  • Maintain records of counseling and protect the confidentiality of student records and student information
  • Follow all ministerial duties to report for mandatory reporting, suicidal ideation, and self-harm
  • Demonstrate and apply knowledge of counseling protocols by applying appropriate practce and follwoing policy for safety of students
  • Use appropriate counseling processes and techniques for individual and group sessions to meet developmental, preventative, and intervention needs of students
  • Utilize site data to make informed decisions regarding comprehensive school counseling program to include special supports to marginalized sub groups
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals to monitor student academic, career and social emotional progress.
  • Assisting students, with Education Career Action plans and post secondary options
  • Teach and facilitate whole classroom lessons that address academic, career, social emotional domain
  • Collaborate with staff in assessing and monitoring student progress toward meeting academic goals
  • Consult and collaborate effectively with parents/guardians regarding student’s identified needs and concerns
  • Support individual students request for necessary letters of recommendations for post- secondary options
  • Perform annual credit audits for students to meet graduation requirements
  • Develop and maintain graduation plans for each student
  • Facilitate annual student registration and assist individual student scheduling needs and updates
  • Provide and support prevention programs including student wellness initiatives, substance abuse, violence prevention, conflict resolution, anti-bullying strategies, peer mediation, and character education
  • Develop and coordinate 504 plans for identified students
  • Educate and outreach with students and families regarding concerns about safety
  • Participate and apply district, site and professional based training. Stay current on evidence based practices and engage in continuing education coursework.
  • Suport and facilitate a positive school climate and culture that includes students, staff, parents/guardians and other stakeholders.
