Job description

The Department of Fish and Wildlife's Northern Region is seeking a motivated individual to work as a Wildlife Habitat Assistant at our Ash Creek Wildlife Area in Bieber, Lassen County.
Incumbent will be involved in planning and performing habitat management (including 400 acres of managed seasonal wetlands) and maintenance programs. Duties include management and maintenance of seasonal wetlands through water management, disking, levee and water control structure repair when necessary. Incumbent will be responsible for field preparation (mowing, disking, and spraying) and planting of cereal grain crops along with the removal of invasive weeds, both chemically and mechanically throughout the area. Other duties include the repair and maintenance of fencing, equipment, vehicles, tools, facilities, and roads. The position will also include management activities such as burning, brush removal, field and road mowing. Incumbent will be expected to maintain and post public use facilities such as informational kiosks, monitor public use and interact with the public during general and special hunting and fishing. Incumbent will occasionally act in a lead worker capacity to Scientific and Seasonal Aids and organize and work with volunteers and inmate crews.
Maintain firebreaks and defensible space around buildings, structures, roads, trails, and the wildland urban interface on Department lands. Reduce ignition sources and fuel loads through mechanical methods (blading, mowing, tree limbing, brush removal), and maintaining road systems to allow for emergency access.
Conduct preventive and routine maintenance, including oil changes on equipment and make minor repairs on vehicles and equipment. Assist with large equipment servicing. Maintain records of maintenance and repair activities, order replacement parts.
Occasionally represent the Department at public meetings related to area functions and operations on Northern Region lands as directed by supervisor. Meet and correspond with individuals and other agencies including water master and school groups to provide information about management Keeps accurate records; prepare expenditure reports, follow purchasing procedures; prepare routine correspondence and reports, herbicide use records, prepare attendance reports, conduct material and equipment inventories, maintain and complete vehicle logs, attend training activities.

Working Conditions
ACWA is located in the Intermountain West, this position works outside where temperatures can exceed 100 degrees in the summer and can fall below zero in the winter. Successful performance of this position requires the use of 4-wheel drive vehicles, wheel tractors with various implements, backhoe, excavator, forklift, side by side and various hand tools. Occasionally, incumbent will work weekends and holidays and when necessary, travel off of the Wildlife Area to aid other Programs. Incumbent must possess a valid Driver's License. Incumbent must have a Class A Driver's License or obtain one within one year of employment. Wearing a Department of Fish and Wildlife uniform is required as a condition of employment while conducting fieldwork and other public work duties. State housing may be available, but residency is not required.
