Wildland Fuels Management Member

We are hiring additional team members for Shaded Fuel Break project in the East Bay Area. This employment opportunity is project specific for the term. Exceptional team members from this project may have the opportunity for full term-time employment. 

Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age.

Multiple seasons experience in Wildland Vegetation Management/ Shaded Fuel Breaks/ Fuel Breaks 

Valid California Class C with a clean record must be maintained for employment

Principles and Practices of wild land fire prevention

Experience in safely utilizing tools and equipment in the process of wild land fire prevention/vegetation management including but not limited to Chain Saws, Pole Saws, Lopers, hand saws, Pulaski, Mcleods,

Have knowledge and experience in maintaining hand tools and power equipment

Experience removing dead/dying trees in terrain

Perform physical work in extreme terrain and environments for an extended period of time

Experience working teams to meet stated objectives

Pass a background and drug tests and physical tests as needed

Experience operating vehicles and UTV’s in steep terrain

Responsibilities

Shaded Fuels Crew Member performs physical tasks related to wildland fuel reduction to meet the requirements of the project shaded fuel break and related duties.

Monitor weather for unfavorable conditions or Red Flag Conditions

Communicate with your Crew Lead for project tasks to efficiently and safely meet clearing goals

Maintain hand tools and power tools including maintaining and sharpening

Cut and remove brush, small trees, and other vegetation using chainsaws, weed-eaters, trimmers, handsaws, polesaws, rakes, McLeods, Pulaskis, pruning shears, broom pullers, shovels, walk behind mowers etc to reduce vegetation and fuel load to provide a line of attack for fire defense.

Operate wood/chipper machine to chip small trees and other vegetation and spread chips with hand tools

Drive crew carriers or other vehicles to transport Shaded Crew Members.

Attend training and meetings including safety trainings and biological resource training.

 

 

Job Description

 

Shaded Fuel Break crew Members will be working on an approximately 190 acre Shaded Fuel Break in the coastal range of the East Bay. Crew members will meet on site and perform vegetation management activities as outlined on project map and directed by crew leads and supervisor. The Project’s first phase is expected to last 3-4 months depending on weather. The first phase will followed by a second phase in Early fall estimated to start mid-September. The possibility of additional work from May through the second phase is possible.

This is a physical position working in rough and steep terrain clearing vegetation including, grass, shrubs, brush, limbs, small trees for a shaded fuel break. Vegetation maybe piled for future burning or chipped onsite. Work type will and can change depending on the prescription for each area.

 

Compensation $28.50-31.50 an hour
