Duties
Leader within a wildland fire module or crew in fuels management, fire suppression, monitoring, and post-fire activities, applies an understanding of firefighter safety, fire behavior, topography of the area, weather, fuels, and training in fire management work to direct suppression operations and to recommend and implement tactical strategy on attacking, controlling, or mopping up fires, building or patrolling firelines, cleaning up burned areas within firelines, suppressing spot fires, felling snags or trees, and cutting brush.
Ensures assigned crew members and equipment for the specific fire assignments or daily work assignments are in a state of readiness for the assignment or initial attack. Participates in or leads physical fitness programs. May serve as an alternate in other fire program areas such as logistical dispatch, cache warehouse, incident business, and administrative support.
Leads less-complex fuels management projects or participates in more complex projects that may include gathering data for monitoring programs and implementing prescribed fire, and mechanical and biological treatments; inventorying fuel beds; and piling vegetation debris.
Leads firefighting personnel by directing their activities when suppressing wildland fires or by serving as a situational leader on wildland fires by directing the work of a small crew of firefighters in building firelines, burning out, mopping up, and patrolling firelines.

Qualifications
This key fire management position is a categorized under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard as a Wildland Firefighter. Employees electing to participate in the FEHB will be responsible for the employee share of the premium while on the official agency roles, which is deducted from bi-weekly earnings. Employees electing to continue coverage under the TCC provision will be responsible for the full premium amount plus a 2% administration fee.

These Wildland Firefighter, GS-0456-06 positions are located at the Mid-Plains Fire Management Zone in:
TEMPORARY 1039: This is a full-time temporary position not-to-exceed 1 year that will total less than 1040 hours (6 months), excluding overtime in a service year. The service year is the calendar year that begins on the date of the employee's initial appointment in the agency. These appointments may be extended from year to year. Extensions of appointment without further competition may be granted based on work needs, funding, or any other condition of employment. The employee may be terminated or placed on an intermittent work schedule (no pre-scheduled tour of duty) at any time.

- One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service demonstrated by performing range or forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include leading firefighting crews in prescribed burning and wildfire suppression field operations and performing wildland fire suppression, preparedness, prevention, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction and prescribed fire as Wildland Firefighter crewmember. - Successfully completed one half year (9 semester hours, 13.5-quarter hours or the equivalent) of graduate level study at an accredited college or university in a field directly related to range technician work such as a major study in range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences.; OR
- Combination of education and experience that when combined meet 100% of the qualification requirements.
