Purpose and Scope of Job:

Weld/Fabricate complete, tight tolerance welded steel assemblies up to 75 kg using plate thicknesses from sheet metal and tack-weld large weldments (up to 1000kg).

Complete all weldments with prescribed levels of quality, in a timely manner, and with proper documentation.


Essential Functions (other duties may be assigned):

  • Read and interpret complex engineering drawings and blueprints (both Imperial and Metric Standards) for manufacturing welded and fabricated components and assemblies. Interpret engineering tolerances (GD&T) and ALL welding symbology called out on drawings.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and part drawings/standards.
  • Read and follow any available process sheets or setup documentation for the parts.
  • Follow best order of welding the assemblies based on shape, size, and complexity of part.
  • Determine equipment, tools, jigs, fixturing and measurement devices required for the job.
  • Use CNC cutting equipment (plasma/laser/water jet) and/or non CNC cutting equipment (Band saw/Handheld plasma) to cut stock (plate, flat bar, tubing, angle) to size and to generate complex burnouts.
  • Use grinder, bead blaster, and other appropriate tools and equipment to clean, finish, and fit subcomponents tin preparation for welding.
  • Lay out position of part and align parts in relation to each other. Use appropriate fixturing to fit components per drawing and hold them in place.
  • Use measuring gauges including micrometers, calipers, height gauge, measuring tape, framing square, straight edge, laser level, etc. in order to ensure adherence to drawing tolerances.
  • Locate and mark reference points, frame lines, etc. as needed.
  • Mark locations of holes to be machined and install temporary fasteners to hold in place for tack welding.
  • Ensure that part is correctly fixtured and tack weld assembly prior to finish (fill) welding.
  • Complete welding joints on Torque arms and Brackets as called out in part/fabrication drawing using MIG/TIG welding equipment as applicable, while ensuring quality of fill weldments are to SMAs prescribed weld standards.
  • Inspect own work and correct welds as necessary to meet product specifications.
  • After part is finish machined, conduct air leak test.
  • Ensure adherence to both routed hours and target efficiencies for production.
  • Provide feedback on equipment, tooling, jigs, fixtures, and work holding solutions to reduce setup times and eliminate rework. Recommend modifications for improved efficiency in assigned areas.
  • Maintains cleanliness of the work area and ensures proper handling of tools, equipment, and stock to prevent loss.
  • Inspect equipment to ascertain if any equipment needs repairs, and if any repairs or maintenance is needed, notify supervisor or maintenance department.
  • Work closely with shop management, quality assurance, and maintenance personnel to proactively prevent problems with machining cells and tooling/fixtures, and to identify ways to improve efficiency, cost, layout, and safety.
  • Utilize in house discrepancy reporting system to record discrepancies and issues with fabrication, and assist in resolution as required.
  • Operate manufacturing computer system in relation to shop orders.
  • Operate material handling equipment (Fork Truck, Overhead Crane, etc.) for movement of parts during fabrication and delivery of finished parts.
  • Ensure all manufacturing safety & regulatory policies and procedures are implemented and maintained at all times.
  • Actively maintain a culture of 5S (Sort, Set and Order, Shine, Standardize and Sustain) in the machine shop.
  • Train and Mentor other Welders (Apprentice and Welder I)
  • Non-Essential Functions (performed on an infrequent basis):
  • Be an active resource in time studies to analyze processes & to validate recommended process changes.
  • Be a resource to company projects. Work on cross functional Lean/Continuous Improvement Teams (including brainstorming sessions and kaizen events) to improve manufacturing process efficiency, costs, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Use systematic Problem Solving methods as required to ensure efficient production methods and quality results.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of welding experience and/or schooling using MIG and/or TIG welding process.
  • At least 3 years of precision structural welding experience, preferably in heavy equipment manufacturing.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced production environment.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; certification in welding from a technical school preferred.
  • Ability to pass American Welding Society 2G test (D1.1 Clause 4 position 2G, Plate) using MIG welding - to be independently administered through SMA.
  • Ability to achieve production welding speeds (manual) of 6 - 10 inches/min for typical 8mm structural welds on MIG welders using 0.035 wire.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with welding equipment such as torches, torch tips, filler rods, flux, hoses, valves, and gas cylinders.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals as required on the blue prints and engineering notes.
  • Must understand GD&T and all welding symbology.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprint drawings and engineering drawings.
  • Demonstrated aptitude using micrometers, calipers, height gauge, measuring tape, framing square, straight edge, and laser level.
  • Must possess visual weld inspection knowledge.
  • Willingness and ability to cross-train other employees in the area is an absolute must. Willingness and ability to coach & mentor less experienced welders on best practices is also required.
  • Willingness to perform the work of other job tasks in addition to the primary assigned position.
  • Ability to understand and use Sumitomo’s Discrepancy reporting process, and other internal process control mechanisms.
  • Knowledge & experience in participating in Time Studies is preferred.

Work Conditions & Physical Environment:

Duties are performed in an industrial environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; twist; bend; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is frequently required to walk. The employee must constantly lift, carry, move, push, and/or pull up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is constantly exposed to moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The employee may be exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud. This position is designated as safety- sensitive.
