Join HII Fleet Sustainment & Modernization (FS&M) in Chesapeake, VA as we keep the most powerful Navy the world has known afloat and ready to serve. FS&M trades teams provide expert solutions on shipboard alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Welder**: First Class candidate will support FS&M, working closely with our skilled trades teams on surface ships performing welding processes and related duties on shipboard structural removals, installations, and upgrades for industrial equipment. Selected candidate will be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.
**Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.
What You Will Do...

  • Display high levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement and performance consistent with company values.
  • Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to perform alterations and installations for fleet modernization
  • Work to meet standards on various contracts such as Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Naval Information Warfare Systems Command and Naval Surface Warfare Center.
  • Master understanding of production and processes, specialty trades functions and tools..
  • Install, operate, maintain, repair and modify equipment.
  • Perform a variety of maintenance and technical support on products such as shipboard systems, integrated systems and related equipment/software at company, customer and/or field locations. Provide onsite training of customer support personnel when required.
  • Perform quality inspections on finished product and provide onsite training of customer support personnel when required.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.
  • Apply comprehensive understanding of production and processes toward completion of assignments.
  • Interface with customers, manage subcontractors, provide work direction and lead others. May manage one or more multiple jobs.
  • Perform a variety of complicated and non-routine tasks including duties outside of specialty in order to complete installation or work assignment.
  • Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.
  • Schedule, report and brief customers and senior management.
  • Participate in special projects as required.

What You Must Have...
**Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must have a High School High School diploma, or Trade School or equivalent, and 6 years of related experience. Prefer technical/professional certifications.
  • Must provide own hand tools as designated per trades specialty.
  • Must have masterful working knowledge and experience with standard ship fitting procedures and structural welding on marine vessels.
  • Must have experience with various types of welding equipment and processes.
  • Must have experience with and be proficient in reading and working from blueprints, drawings, schematics, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction.
  • Must be able to follow/enforce safety procedures to ensure a safe and secure work environment.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with quality control steps, procedures and testing required for installed structures.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD secret security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.
  • Must be able to obtain base access credentials within 60 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.
  • Must be able to travel between 50% - 75% when not assigned to local tasking.

Preferred: Bonus Points For...
  • Prefer candidate with experience/knowledge in multiple welding processes including: gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW)
  • and/or flux cored arc welding (FCAW).
  • Candidate with current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248 preferred.
  • Candidate with shipboard experience highly desired.
  • Prior experience leading junior level tradesmen a plus.
  • Candidate who has graduated from and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or skilled trades certificate program are preferred.
  • Current Shipyard Competent Person Certification preferred.
  • Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate a plus.

Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces. Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels. May ride ships at sea for extended periods. May require wearing a respirator. Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
