Job description

MIT Lincoln Laboratory’s Communications and Community Outreach Office is seeking a Web Architect and developer who will work directly with the office’s editorial and design team to develop and maintain the Laboratory’s dynamic external website. The person will be responsible for maintaining and upgrading the website's content infrastructure; and creating functional, appealing webpages that feature interactive components and video to enhance the presentation of content that supports Lincoln Laboratory's vision and mission. The web developer plays a critical role in creating Lincoln Laboratory’s external presence, defining a cohesive digital strategy for external audiences, and in growing its online community of users.

Job Description

The Web Architect will co-lead with an editorial staff and ISD web personnel on significant web design projects for the external web. 

The job requires effective collaboration with not only the staff in the Communications and Community Outreach Office but also with programmers and app developers in the Information Services Department; staff in the technical divisions, administrative offices, and services; and photographers, videographers, and artists in the Technical Communications group.

The Web Architect should be highly organized to manage an efficient workflow for a constantly evolving website with many concurrent projects. They will need substantial experience with tools for web design and publishing.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate new capabilities that could be applied to the website to keep it technologically up to date; implement such new capabilities and conduct usability testing on them.
  • Work with Communications and Community Outreach Office staff to determine ways that new technologies can best be utilized to enhance the website's content and to improve visitors' experience with the site.
  • Optimize the CMS interface based on editors’ needs to streamline workflow and improve consistency.
  • Advise on restructure or redesign of webpages to improve their functionality and audience appeal.
  • Monitor the site to assure that it continues to function effectively (e.g., links, video, and animations work) and maintain accessibility standards.
  • Develop and implement strategies to increase user engagement on the website.
  • Work with Communications and Community Outreach Office staff to maintain the “currentness” of the website, for example, routinely refresh the website’s homepage with new features highlighted by photographs or video or develop new approaches to present content.
  • Track/Analyze the traffic and user behavior on the website to determine if the website’s design, content, and functionality are meeting benchmarks for increased user interactions and use this data to inform future design decisions.
  • Working with a videographer and animator, build a collection of videos for display on the website to highlight Lincoln Laboratory’s technology developments, programs, and technical staff.
Requirements
  • Master’s degree with 8 to 10 years of experience with web design/ architecture, web-based publishing, and online media. Experience with UX and UI design and development.
  • Experience working with a CMS, including custom theming and module development (Drupal a plus).
  • Experience creating responsive websites that include multimedia and interactive elements.
  • Experience working with PHP, JavaScript, HTML, and SCSS.
  • Ability to work well in a team and with collaborators from diverse divisions, departments, and groups.
  • Prior experience working in a communications office a plus.
  • Experience with web tools and programming; understanding of best practices in UX/UI design; experience with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign; familiarity with Microsoft Office suite.
